Have you seen the price of wet fish these days??? £17 per kg. for Atlantic Cod, and £15 per kg for Haddock.
OH bought a couple of pieces for our tea tonight, almost £4, and well, lets just say that it is a good job I am coating them, and serving with bread an butter, or I would think I was living through a famine.
It is positively outdacious. Bet the fishermen hardly see any of that price.

I actually managed to get four really nice salmon fillets the other day for under £3 !
But usually fish is sooooo expensive which is a shame because I love it.

We were talking about fish today because we were in a cafe.

There is meant to be a problem with declining fish stocks yet where can you buy a small piece of cooked fis?. I don't know about wet fish because I don't use it.

Most portions of fish are far too large and would be adequate for at least two people so, no doubt a lot of it is thrown away.

Half a piece from our chip van feeds Fred and the cat quite royally.

In Hartlepool in the early eighties, monkfish was a cheap fish - much less than cod and haddock - so I often bought it. Now it's a cheffy favourite, and it sells for over £24 per Kilo in Norfolk!

Love fish.....sigh....but there is a problem with "over fishing", especially with Cod.

Some of the farmed fish are okay, but even if it's of the 'wet' variety, unless you live on the coast and can buy absolutely fresh, it's never as good.

Cheap(er) alternatives, whilst retaining some taste, are farmed trout and catfish ((latter comes with various names such as 'Vietnamese River Fish etc... a good firm fish, with taste)).

Monkfish was great for 'stews', but as mentioned, the more popular it gets, the higher the price. Sea Bass is brill, but a bit pricey.

If you have a fish market/monger in your area, I'd recommend trying some of the more 'less popular, or unusual' fish .... Cod or Haddock and chips is not the only thing on the market!

Link is to a local market fishmonger, listing their wet fish produce (was going to paste it, but tooooo long !!! :-D). Have a look around your area....

Julia - always thought the fishermen had a job not to be envied dangerous and little return.

Cannot understand returning dead fish to the sea - daft idea of the Bureaucrats.

Yum indeed, Jean, but my o.h. hates them and complains of the smell lol I also eat a lot of salmon when he is on the late shift but again, he doesn't like the smell when he gets in.

When my son was young, from about two years old he would enjoy a piece of cod grilled with peas and carrots or corn, I would buy it for him two or three times a week, as we had a fishmonger/greengrocer very close to our house. It was affordable then.

Fish and chips isn't a cheap takeaway, it costs us nearly £9 for two medium sized portions of fish and some chips from our favourite chippie.

Like Errol I wait until the clearace shelves are full with bargains. Yesterday I bought smoked cod tail ends for £2.20 reduced from £4.00 and they were beautiful.

I love sea fish, but won't eat cod.
In the Shetlands, it's known as 'Worm fish' - for good reason :-D

This is also why I don't eat Sushi

I quite enjoy frozen Admiral's Pie. Just whack it in oven for 40 minutes and you have a nice satisfying meal with plenty of fish.

But it is only 75p in my local Farm Foods. And that is not a promotion price - it has been 75p for 18 months.

So where does the fish come from? What is it? I am wondering (horror orf horrors) if it is seahorse :-0 :-0 :-0

Monkfish used to be called the working man's salmon, I think. Fishermen used to throw it away :-(

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 24 Mar 2013 00:35

I don't eat Youngs....... :-|

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 24 Mar 2013 00:51

Julia Report 24 Mar 2013 09:09

Maggiewinchester, I know what you mean. I would not eat Admiral Pie, if it was given free, and I was starving, and I do mean that.
I make fish pie, with white fish, smoked fish and prawns, not cheap I know, but at least I know the contents of the pie. Similarly I make fish fingers and fish cakes, but from real ingredients. If I want crab, I buy a crab, not paste.
You get what you pay for, and I would not be seen dead in F*** F***s.
