The hospital providing treatment is supposed to check that only those who are eligible receive free treatment. Our local hospital has been asking for you to bring ID & V for several years now if you aren't already known to them.

However, it appears that some hospital trusts may not always have been as rigorous in checking as they might have been.

Ann, Although I am a Scotsman, I live in Geordieland, England.

Having had many Hospital appointments in the last few years, this is the first time that this has been included in the letter.

This has been the case for a long time. It doesn't mean that you have to have British citizenship, just that you normally live in the UK. It is not based on anything else so your actual nationality, for example, is not taken into account.

Received a letter today for a Hospital appointment. The letter included the following paragraph-

"NHS Treatment is only free to those who are ordinarily resident in the UK for reasons of lawful settlement. By attending this appointment you are confirming that you are entitled to free treatment. If it transpires that you are not entitled to free NHS Treatment you must pay for the treatment"

I haven't seen that before.
