I was a bit young for the other two, but I probably saw Jupiter's Darling, it was around the right time.
Thanks, Ann. :-)

Esther Williams was in: Neptune's Daughter (1949) with Gene Kelly in Take Me Out to the Ballgame (1949). Jupiter's Darling (1955).).

Are these the ones you mean?

Was it Esther Williams who did the swimming sequence films?

I used to love the musical films in the 50's which had an underwater dance sequence; I thought that was really magical. Can't remember what any of them were called. Anybody know?

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 29 Mar 2013 15:27

again, not a musical, but anyone remember The Mudlarks? My Mum took me to see that one I think.

Yes remember that film Mr Daff.

Oh Mau how could we all forget Oliver, loved that film and the lad that played Oliver was, at one time, a chiropracter or Osteopath in Cheltenham.

No Mau I didn't think you were correcting me...I just looked it up to check as I knew it was before my daughter was born in 1958 as we'd had a trip to Wales and my f.iL took us to see.....Must say the Dovey estuary and Beddgelert looked very realistic and it brought a lot of visitors to the area.
Wouldn't mind seeing the film again. X

oh I hope you don't think I was correcting you Brenda, just that I recall the film due to how old I was at the time.

Very interesting to learn about where it was filmed, didn't know any of that info.thanks :-)x

Yes Mau I was a bit wrong with the date, but that was the date it was released. There was a lot of preparation in Wales to build the sets before the actual filming.
I do know that there were a lot of local people used as extras.
I wasn't living in Wales then, but my in laws did and FIL was very interested and kept going to see the progress in the various locations.
It must have been later than I said....probably 1957 !

Inn of Sixth Happiness Brenda........1958 was the story of Gladys Alyward (Ingrid Bergman)

I've personal reasons for remembering this film, a real tearjerker.

Remember the song?

This old man he played one,
He played knick-knack on my thumb;
With a knick-knack paddywhack,
Give the dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

Inn of Sixth Happiness. Think it was around 1954/5 Remember seeing the set of that in Beddgelert...and the paddy fields near Portmeirion.

Not a musical, but a film I always remember was 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness' - just found it fascinating.

Ann in C - 2 questions:
A. The name of the cinema that used to be in Old Church Road (my saturday matinee cinema!), and
B. the one opposite Caroline St in Cardiff - was it the Prince of Wales (mucky coat brigade cinema :-D) ?

Lots of memories from previous posts ... and I'm only a youngster too!!

Yes, Frank Sinatra, Ann. Seems there several us doing the rounds in Manchester at that time.

Was only looking at old programmes today from the opera house, as well as remembering South Pacific as Brenda states. We always had a laugh at not understanding Rosanno Brazzi's accent. For years we thought he said "you say you are a piece of cheese" instead of "you say you are a fugitive" . Mind you we were probably up to no good at that time.

Just as a by-line, i was in the News theatre at the time of the Munich air crash and they kept flashing up on the screen who was dead and who was alive. 1958. Very emotive.

Happy days

In Manchester where I lived in the late 50's the Gaumont and the Odeon were almost opposite on Oxford Rd.There was always a good musical on.
.South Pacific was on for so long that the bus driver didnt announce the stop as Gaumont, but South Pacific.

Our entertainment was very good I believe, and very often got the Wurlitzer pop up and play topical music.there was usually another short film on as well making it quite a good evening out.
