I did suggest autism in my previous post, as Bert has answered several questions or responded to remarks literally. I thought Autism altho it wouldn't have that label then, would it?

I am still finding ti a little difficult to follow, which is unusual for me, I can normally get to grips with a cast and plot before now, but this one is a bit too confusing.

Terrible that the baby was taken from his mother in the way it was.

There are bits of The Village that confuse me too.
However,
Being the Minister's daughter was apparent in week 1
In week 2 she was at the Big House for dinner when it was mentioned that she was Methodist ( the bit about table wine, temperance and the Suffragette Movement)
The entire Village seem to be Methodist themselves, ( they all attended the Sunday Service) and I got confused.
I looked it up last night
Not all Methodists are teetotal, but they encourage abstinence or responsible drinking.

Sparkly
It did occur to me that Bert might have Aspergers or another form of Autism.
I thought it when he asked his teacher if he had " grown taller "

So halfway through episode 3 we discover she is the Methodist ministers daughter!! maybe it was mentioned before and I missed it :-S

Starting to get more interesting but still feel the editing is disjointed

Would like the characters to have been built up more, with a little background.

I find it's a bit disjointed.

Does anyone else think the boy Bert could be autistic, as he answered the teacher literally each time a question was roared at him in temper? Sounded as tho he was being cheeky but it's the way autistic people would respond.

I don't understand why the Methodist girl has such a hold over folk, has she got some sort of special role there in the village?

Wonder what will happen next week?

oh yes forgot she was frightened.

{But why indeed have to whisper when they were the only two in the room?}...........pmsl... daft isn't it? :-D

LollyWithSprinklez

LollyWithSprinklez Report 8 Apr 2013 00:02

I think that was to ensure sure she was actually dead as she was frightened of being buried alive ( I always believed blood doesn't run post mort anyway)

But why indeed have to whisper when they were the only two in the room?

Mauatthecoast

Mauatthecoast Report 7 Apr 2013 23:57

....and another thing why did the old woman whisper to the little lad,who then later (when she'd died) get a bucket for her blood :-0 :-0..............can't wait for next week

Mauatthecoast

Mauatthecoast Report 7 Apr 2013 23:51

......yes and how did she know he was an alcoholic? I thought at first that they'd met before!.........curiouser and curiouser said Alice ;-) :-(

LollyWithSprinklez

LollyWithSprinklez Report 7 Apr 2013 23:47

And another thing...Who was the old lady that died had she ever been mentioned before?

Very odd editing!!

LollyWithSprinklez Report 7 Apr 2013 23:44

Hi Mau~~~I kept get the same feeling that I've missed an episode or something - Has it ever been explained who this mystery girl actually is?

She stepped off the bus last week, had lunch at the big house, Walked into a bar full of men & berated them, a complete stranger in a small village and doesn't appear to be raising any suspicion or raising eyebrows...very strange as you say

Mauatthecoast

Mauatthecoast Report 7 Apr 2013 23:34

Hi Lolly....I thought it a bit odd that Middleton confessed to the young Methodist girl, and I thought I'd missed a part of the dialogue...very strange!

LollyWithSprinklez

LollyWithSprinklez Report 7 Apr 2013 23:29

Well not so sure now after part 2 :-(

The acting I thought was good but too slow moving and the story line is being painfully drawn out - Why the need for a confession to the young Methodist girl?
There isn't any cohesion with the characters apart from John his wife & son.

Will give it one last chance next week

Think it will be a slow burner. Will probably stick to my Foyles War and catch up on
The Village.

I was left handed in the late 40's at primary school (still am). Did not get any flak for it. I do remember the little black boards and chalk we used. That was it and a teacher at the front. I think at aged 5 we sat on the floor.

I hope it picks up a bit. I remember the left hand bit in the 50s at school, being the only lefthander in the class. Never bothered me, still dosnt. :-D

I also noticed that all the children had boots - the poor did not in those days.

I found it a bit dragged out, repetitive and padded at times.

Like Rollo I hope it picks up

A whole village school with leather shoes on in 1914 ? Hand scything ?

For those who could afford it there were far more efficient hot water systems in 1914 than carrying a container from the kitchen.

Apart from small holdings it will be interesting to see what they come up with as occupations in the village.

Schools in these villages generally had a long bench not individual desks at that time.

The drama itself was predictable and pedestrian. I just hope it picks up.

One thing is bang on. The educational establishment had a real hang up about being left handed until not so long ago.

I recorded it and watched it later, it was good and I am looking forward to the next episode already.

I have to record so many programmes that o.h. isn't interested in, mind you, with him working all weekend, he's been asleep in his chair most evenings from about 9.15pm - it takes forever to wake him and send him up to bed so I don't have to put up with his snoring lol

Thank heaven for dvd recorders etc

Watched the Toughest place to be a bus driver follow up, it was lovely.

I read about the locals Brenda - too many fake tans & over-plucked eyebrows too ;-)

My grandad (born 1897) was left handed, and was 'persuaded' to use his right hand.
But mum (born 1930) also left handed was allowed to be so. She even went on to win handwriting competitions - and she didn't write with her hand above the text!

Reminded me of my primary school....not at that time....but in the 40's and I got the strap for being left handed...so that went on for many years...we felt we were not quite as good as other children.
Shows the work ethic in those days though!...so much contrast from these days.
Isn't the little lad good in the part and so expressive.
Anyone read that they couldn't use most of the locals as extras because of tattoos dyed hair and piercings!

maggiewinchester Report 31 Mar 2013 23:21

Why oh why oh why (sorry gone into stereotypical 'complaint' mode) do we end up with good viewing at the same time :-P

Last week I watched Foyles War - which I love. This week I had to forego that pleasure to watch The Village. My little brain cell had to work out which was most likely to be repeated.

I think I'm going to like The Village.
