Not neglected just cant get any further with my German line. last I have is grt grandfather living with one of his married sons in 1907 when grt grandmother died in the German Hospital Dalston. He is gone by 1911 with no sign of where to . Cant find either some of the other sons that show on the 1891 and 1901 census.

My grandfather was lost at sea in June 1911 on route from Melbourne to Bremen

Without knowing where in Germany they came from then its a brickwall

Definitely something odd happening with the posts! Maggie's and OFITG's posts appeared after I had posted at 13.29, they must have been hovering in the ether , or mine was lol.

Like many others on this thread, I have hit a brick wall with Irish ancestors, my 2nd great grandparents on my mother's side, prior to 1880 census. Had help from others on this site, but their origins and parentage remains a mystery.
My Dad's Welsh ancestors have proved tricky, as there were quite a few of the same name born in the same place in the same year!
Apart from that, I've managed to get back to 1500's on some lines. I have really enjoyed searching - it's amazing what turns up, things you'd never imagine!

I have neglected paternal gt grandfather and his father cos I'm stuck! Gt gt grandfather was a travelling cutler/brazier and I can't find him in any census or birth/marriage record and have no idea where he was born. I can find everything for gt grandfather except any of his siblings. I found his father and mother on a baptism cert for him. It was quite an eye opener for me as mum had often said dad was related to gipsies but I'd always thought she was joking!!

A John Jones married a Rachel Jones in Llanelly, Brec in the 1850s. Neither was baptised there and both sets of parents were born out of county.

My dad's father's side.
Mainly because no-one knows who he was!!

My gran reckoned it was X. Gran even used his surname occasionally, when dad was a lad. But then, she made him use all sorts of names.
She would send him to a private school until the demands for payment got too intense, then take him out, re-name him and send him to another one!

Anyway, I thought X was a possibility, until I found out he was 30 years older than gran, had been a close family friend and had 5 children.
Still possible though. One of X's children contacted me (that's when I found out about the children). He didn't seemed too shocked at the possibility his father may have fathered 2 (dad & his sister) extra-marital children, but when I suggested a DNA test, I never heard from him again :-D

Another possibility is my gran's cousin. He was 2 years younger than gran. Gran was brought up by his parents - her father's sister & husband - (surname Gay) from about the age of 6.
When my brother went to gran's funeral, (gran died after dad), a total stranger walked up to my brother and said 'You have 'Gay' eyes'.
Fortunately my bro realised he meant it was a family trait!!
Both this brother and dad had jet black hair and the weirdest blue eyes.
But then, my gran had jet black hair & blue eyes - not quite the same striking blue, though.

Both my dad and I had, at different times, asked gran who dad's father was/possibly was. Her last answer was 'You need to look to Juarez'!! This implies a random sailor!!

I have given up on three brick walls that I have struggled with which are key to expanding my tree, a George Wotherspoon, a James Patrick Clusker, and a Thomas Wotherspoon.

In the case of George Wotherspoon there is a 50 year gap in the relevant parish records, in the case of James Patrick Clusker I have found census details but nothing about his marriage, and in the case of Thomas Wotherspoon last I knew of him was when he came to my grandfather's funeral in 1952.

Despite a lot of helpful information from the volunteers on here, I have literally ground to a standstill :-(

That's good Island :-) I had no idea about my paternal grandfather's side till a few years back, still some mysteries to solve there, but he also had lots of siblings!

well I've just made something of a breakthrough, I hope, in that I have found a death which might match up, that and the name on a baptism are so far the only evidence that the lady existed.

I've been lucky not to have to buy many certs, but have a growing list of death certs which may shed some light....I need to win the lottery :-D

Yes! one branch was the be all and end all throughout my life and no others existed so I've largely ignored the former because they just weren't interesting enough any more.
Finding the other three sides has been an exciting voyage of discovery - right from learning that my grandmother had 11 siblings.

Muffy, it's not too bad when you find something nasty unexpectedly, but must be hard to go looking for it, if you see what I mean. So far I haven't found anyone with too terrible a secret.

The problem is that there are 2 men born same area, in roughly the same year. Mine didn't marry the mother of his children, so there isn't a MC to give this father's name :-|

My great grandmother on my mother's side, Mary Jane. She was born in Ireland, moved to Scotland where she married or maybe not. Has given different dob's on all docs I have managed to find and has been married in at least 3 churches according to her children's Scottish birth records. She had a tough time lost many babies, came to England and had a husband die on her in the Asylum. I think I must ask my genes friends to help me on the other side.

I am doing 8 great grandparents and 8 gt grandparents of my wife.

Know all of them pretty well but am stuck with quite a few of previous generations who were born about 1800. Two are from Ireland and came to Liverpool and gave birth to one of my gt gt grandparents in 1824.

It doesn't help when your mum told you "Grandma Marney came from Waterford. Her dad was a schoolteacher". Well she was Mahoney (Mener on 1846 marriage certificate?) and appears to have been born in Liverpool and her father was a cooper in the docks!!! But still very stuck after 30 years plus :-( :-(

My Nerrlie line Rose for 40 years. Have had help from
researches on here but am no further forward in knowing
where my G Grandfather was born or who his parents were.

I keep going back every now and again with nothing new coming
along, however have found 2nd cousins who are also stumped so
not alone.

Yes........one of my great grandad's ......bad family rumours about some of the things he did that makes me stomach turn....I've chased his mothers side....but everytime I try and do the paternal line I lose heart.

I've just remembered that I had done little or no research on my mother's grandmother on one side ( now I know why, I can't find her on a census before she married!). The other lines seemed 'closer' somehow because they were names I knew of.
