Unless social services were aware that the children were witnessing subversive/depraved acts by the adults I can see no reason why the family would be scrutinised unless a complaint had been made.

No doubt a lot of social workers do their best with a huge case load but just reflect on how many children have been let down by this agency and died. It's not a one size fits all umbrella service.

Even if the family had been interviewed and received counselling and support I doubt it would have stopped him from wanting custody of the children and revenge on his ex partner.

Mick's whole life has been a financial scam, Sandie. Only interested in one person and how he can get as much money out of the system as possible without putting anything in at all.

I cannot even feel sorry for the many women in his life. To have four children by him, remain unmarried whilst he is having children with a wife and all and sundry, is the height of irresponsibility.

No, I have not been in his situation, or theirs, before anybody asks. But I do have some sort of moral compass, like most people. There's was revolving at 100mph.

How many times has this got to happen before we finally realise that social workers are not up to dealing with this sort of extreme family? :-(

I didn't work in Social Services, but were in close contact with them.

They were not to blame....

The judge will decide soon.

I have to say the children looked very happy, reports from teachers were all positive - however, the environment was not good - the constant four letter words coming from his filthy mouth and the way he treated women must have an effect on young children

A swearing parent,,,,,doesnt make them a bad parent.

Parents sleeping with other partners doesnt make them a bad parent.

What it does do is instill in children,if you behave like this its OK.,but you can find childen brought up in these situations often find their own moral way in life and strive for something better and not become a chip off the old block,

Kay. I would just like to say that I don't think I agree with a word you have written. That goes against everything I have been brought up to believe.

My parents and those I knew closely in childhood did not have a lot of faith, so I am not making a Christian point at all. There is a right way to live and a wrong way to live. Everything that you have written down is the wrong way to live, the wrong way to raise children imo.

And that sort of attitude (not always, I admit) carries on into the next generatioin and the one after.

The point you make about "grab and drag is a thing of the past" was interesting. No, I didn't know that. I expect you are right, because it would now be widely publicised and social workers vilified - not the feckless parents..

I formed the opinion after watching Kyle when Philpotts had 17 children and 2 on the way that Mick had skills of memory and arithmetic - if he could remember all their names and was sure he had counted his achievements correctly. I also formed the opinion that, on balance, children should not be in that environment. That he should have been sterilised and all the children should have been moved to safer homes.

It is not being clever after the event - I think it is probably what many people thought after seeing that disgusting performance on Jeemy Kyle. :-(

I saw Ann Widdecombe on TV yesterday talking about her meeting with the Phillipotts. She had nothing good whatsoever to say about him, she said he was work shy living on social security, he was verbally abusive to his wife and girlfriend (who was living with them at the time). He was confrontational and verbally aggressive to Ann, who stood up to him extremely well, but said later that she felt intimidated by him. She went on to say the children were well dressed, well fed, and looked happy and seemed to have a good family life. She said that she believed that Mike seemed genuinely to love his family. The chiderens' school also said they were all happy children, so why would social services need to be involved? As it turned out his true character paints a very different picture, and the results led to the tragic events caused the death of these poor children, both parents and their accomplish will have many years to reflect on what they have done. I personally hope they never have a moments peace, but somehow I think that may not be the case.

I don't envy the Judge today, clearly she struggled yesterday coming to a sentencing decision. Manslaughter has a maximum of fifteen years as it's not murder, or intent to cause serious harm. I can't see them getting and extended sentence as there has to be a certain legal criteria to be met. I think the sentence will be lower than we would want or expect.

There isnt a right or wrong way to live for everyone ,,,,,,,,,some would say your upbringing wouldnt have been a life they would have wanted.

Read threads on here where a child has been brought up in a good clean household,but where the cruel life they led under that parent has left lasting effects even to this day.
So are you saying all children follow in a parents footsteps? which is utter rubbish,,,,,,
