Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 6 Apr 2013 17:02

Spurred on by a recent thread on here about neglected lines of research, I had another look at my Southampton area JONES.
I decided to research Great grandmother Charlotte's siblings in the hope that I could find what happened to their father with the distinctive ( not) name of George JONES a labourer.

One sister married a James CHALK....Now my OH has a long line of CHALKs, but they hailed from Downton, Wiltshire, so I though nothing of this, but a tree on Ancestry traces James line back to Downton before the move to Hampshire.

OH has researched his side and says his findings coincide with the tree owner and he already knew of the marriage to JONES, but didn't realise that the bride of that marriage was my relative.

It's a very distant link, but when you think that OH was born in Scotland, his father in Kent and we met in Wales, it was a surprising find.

That's amazing Gwyn.

I must look further down my 'Burts' line.
Florence Burt was my gg grandmother.
Her Father, Edwin was born in the New Forest and moved to Southampton.
Glancing idly at my ex's tree - not really doing it, but someone else has, so occasionally I check his findings, I notice that, though one grandmother moved here from Liverpool, the other came from Wiltshire, and her parents were from......The New Forest - and I've checked that!.
It sounds a generation out - his gg grandparents and my ggg grandparents, but ex's dad married late and was 1 year younger than one of my grans, and one year older than the other!!

We met in Southampton, he was in the RAF in Cyprus, and came back for his mother's funeral. My sister's then boyfriend (late husband now) was an old schoolfriend of the ex's.

PH...I think so !
My GG aunt married his 2nd cousin 4 times removed

Daughter sort of huffed when we were talking about this earlier.

" More like Marshians every day ".

This is because the folk from nearby Romney Marsh at one time usually married from within local families, so nearly everyone was related to everyone else.

I think our link is distant enough not to worry about, but interesting all the same.
