I live a mile and half away from the Philpotts house and have driven by it on numerous occasions.

I know from working in their local community that an awful lot of residents are quite keen that the houses are demolished and a garden of rememberance is created. Personally I think that whatever Derby City Council do, be it re-build two new homes or have a garden of rememberance, that small area will always be referred to as where the six children died.

Perhaps if equipment similar to that in other parks near me, like a small mini gym which are very popular with youngsters and is almost always in use, would be nice. Seeing children happy and having fun is always a good thing.

Well I am sticking by what I have already said, unless Derby County has more houses to let the most I do not see how a garden or orchid will benefit the community . My SIL lost her daughter and granddaughter in a housefire obviously she was rehoused whilst the house was done up and then told she had to move back to it as there was no 3 bedroom houses available that was nearly 30 yrs ago she still lives in the house today.

I found out about 2 mths after moving in to the house I now live in that elderly gent who owned the house before us died in the very bedroom I sleep in and have done so peacefully for the past 17 yrs.

The house at the moment stands as a burnt out shell, thats not how it will be let if it is decided not to demolish it and they do I really do hope they bulit a family home in its place.

in the 80s a local family lost 4 children and an uncle in a house fire on a local council estate, the 5th child escaped through the sky light in the attic bedroom.

the council knocked the house down.

Meybe as there is so much shortage of 1/2 bed flats they could build 6 or 8 on that site thus easing the housing problem.just a thought ,to bring something good out of something bad.

The Derby head man from the CC has stated,,,,,,,*****legally before any steps on a decision can be carried out legally we need Mr Philpott to sign away tennants rights*****.

RolloTheRed Report 8 Apr 2013 13:24

Most councils and associations providing social housing have terms relating to their lets which I would rather have thought the Philpotts had broken.

South Derbyshire housing policy can be found here:

Something like a community orchard might do a lot to bring the community together or some sort of community allotment.

Kay???? Report 8 Apr 2013 12:12

Only one house belongs to DCC,,,,,,,,the other was a bought property which the elderly person since the fire had passed away,so we are only speaking of 1 new house........DCC are in talks to buy the other property..

The locals and family will care for the plot,,,,,thats why they want something lasting,,,,,,

We all know that many lives are lost through fire,as has happened just this part week 2 teens and a small child ,its heartbreaking,,,,,,,but the Derby case isnt,I dont think Ive ever heard of 6 children in one fell swoop die in a housefire though a dire selfish act of the parents.

nesh - soft, feels the cold easily, easily scared
As in "don't be so nesh"

As Mayfield says houses are needed a lot more than a plot of remembrance.
Today's disasters are soon forgotten. In a generation this sad affair will be forgotten, the need for housing goes on and on. I cannot see the problem with brand new housing.

Who is going to maintain and look after such a garden ?

Which two families who need social housing are going to go without ?

Do we really want the country dotted with memorials to the victims of foul deeds ?

Radio Derbyshire ( which I do listen to when I visit the east Midlands ) is not particularly representative of a very diverse county. I don't feel that the opinions on any of these UK local radio stations count for much.

Don't forget to remember those neighbours who will have to continue living as best they can in that dreadful location - not to mention Philpott's extended family. They too are victims of the greed & stupidity of the three fools in jail.

Kay, that was exactly what I meant. It was not my opinion, nor something I had picked up from somewhere. I was typing as I was listening to a broadcast on the local radio, with a City councelor. No, the neighbours have never said they want another house being built there.
Rollo, please do not call me names. You do not know me, but if you do insists in this insidious behavoir, please get the correct word. For someone who professes to know all things Derbyshire and Notts.you do not know the meaning of the word you used. To us who happen to live here, "nesh", means someone who feels the cold easily. But, I suppose you, with your mighty knowledge of where I live, are going to correct me.

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 8 Apr 2013 11:18

This is a terrible act but unlike the West house it's very unlikely that hoards of ghoulish people will be attracted to the site.

Every year 500 people die as a result of house fires there were over 6000 suicides many of which were at home along with the sad cases of people dieing alone and being there for months before they are found.

We don't tear down these houses. People who are desperate for a place to live are glad to move in and bring them back to happy family homes.

We have a housing shortage knocking down TWO houses as a gesture just does not make any kind of sense.

In fact when you look at the site on Google of the old Fred West house in it's not a garden just a cut through to the road behind now.

Well thats my two pennth for what it's worth.

The locals dont new housing, they are of a majority for a garden.

I think at this early stage its too new and raw for the people of that street who knew saw and the children on a daily basis and relatives nearby to see new houses built.

not even a year has past yet.

They have never built at Soham nor will in our lifetimes,

Personally I'd knock the houses down and build brand new.....I would live in a new one tbh...why not ! I don't believe in hauntings and it wasn't the houses fault it set alight after all..........
