NS .......................

but why are you pressuring people now to put up an avatar, or to regularly change their avatar???

those of us older members who want to have one have had them for the last 2+ years, ever since we had the ability to decorate the site ............... and we change them as and when we wish to, not on command

Older members who do not wish to have them, or who have difficulty replacing them are perfectly free to do as they wish.

and we all have chosen old pictures, new ones or whatever, as we feel like

Part of me does in fact dislike them on GR ................. I do not think pretty pictures have any kind of place on a serious site ................. and yet I am as guilty as anyone of posting pretty flowers, views, etc.

I've noticed OH never thinks I am working on anything serious when he comes in and sees these pictures displayed on GR ............... and on some other genealogy sites.

He thinks I am just wasting time on a chat site.

I must admit that I am in general rather horrified by the number of "modern" pictures that are posted as avatars ..................... especially those of children ............... both on here and on FB

But i guess I am just another old fogey concerned about security and identity loss.

Mauonthecoast - what a fun image.

It is called keeping up with the times - lightening the mood.

Yes, yes I know mine needs changing - it is sort of sentimental for me. Really need one that is a bit weird and wacky or something more in tune with my spiritual side.

New ideas and a fresh approach... the avatar idea is over two years old... hardly something novel.

I guess I will be old fashioned and go back to my original one... that will keep my mother happy and my great aunt.. :-)

There are, I`m betting a lot of people that haven`t a clue how to put a piccie on and are a little embarrassed to ask how to,

Think I may go back to being a Sock Puppet again... :-D :-D :-D

What does it matter anyway. Some of us want a piccie up, some of us don't . It's what is known as freedom of choice.

A very contraversial posting Nana sue.

SuffolkVera Report 22 May 2013 12:01

I wasn't going to post on here but feel I must.

NanaSue - I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt and hope that what you actually wrote was meant to come over differently, but I do resent being called an old moaner who is frightened of anything new. You don't know me but I can assure you that I am not.

I DO know how to add an avatar but have chosen not to because it is not important to me. I don't look for pictures. I look for board names and thread titles. I might add one at a later date but it will be my choice.

If you want people to lighten up a little on your threads, then you need to give a thought to the words you use.

That's all I intend to say on the subject.

Afternoon Sue, :-)
sadly I`m afraid it not just the words one uses, its some times down to the interpretation of those words by the reader.

Don't know about others but the image / avatar sort of gives one a mental image about what they feel a person may look like. I think in pics.

SuffolkVera - just one of my usual phrases - applies to me as well.

There is nowt a queer as folks - I'm a moaning minnie myself at the mo.
Or as Janet S-Porter has just said on Loose Women "I'm an old relic"

Just life .......

How can you get an idea what someone looks like, if they have never used a photo of themself?

I admit to using a couple of photos of me as a child/baby.....but I have changed a bit since then

I look a lot like my new picture - an old bird :-P

Actually the bird has better legs than me ;-)

Well, just to prove I am not an old moaner I have actually managed to find myself a photo and, more than that, upload it.

Not as stupid as I thought I was !!!!! M

I love looking at the Avatars, it does not matter to me if it is an actual photo of the person or if it relates to the name or something else. When I first joined GR I was chatting to someone and from the Avatar and board name I had no idea if it was male or female, but I enjoyed our chats.......

Cynthia Report 22 May 2013 13:34

Errol, don't worry........we all know that you are not as green as you look....... ;-)

Merlin, shouldn't you have an apple in your mouth???

My avatars tend to reflect things I am interested in, not what I actually look like and, to be honest, I don't always WANT to know what people look like - I sometimes prefer to keep an 'illusion' in my head...............to me, Errol is a pet lamb....... in real life he may be a roaring lion :-)

I would not be so rude as to call anyone an 'old moaner', simply because they didn't have an avatar. There is also plenty of light and laughter around on the boards - if one looks in the right places...........
