Joy. She was quite small and pretty, very smart and had beautiful and piercing blue eyes. Only met her once briefly, but could understand why men in her Cabinet fell under her spell. :-)

You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.

All politicians have enemies in life - that is part and parcel of the job.

But politics is the art of reconciliation for the common good. Listening to views and persuasion. Not closing your eyes and ears and hectoring and lecturing.

Clem Attlee upset a lot of people, Churchill is still very disliked in my valley for something he did 100 years ago, MacMillan made enemies in his night of the long knives, Eden took us into a damaging battle in the Suez, Wilson gave honours to his cronies - Lord Gannex, Baroness Falkender etc, Heath put us on a 3 day week and the pips really squeaked in working families, Callaghan was quite a good Chancellor, can't even remember what he (or Douglas-Home) achieved as PM..

But all of them had an ordinary and well-attended funeral (Churchill's State Funeral was because he took Britain through its darkest hour, I believe). And even their political enemies spoke fondly about them in death. I watched about half an hour of the sixth hour of eulogies in the Commons last night fro Mrs T. About 12 Tories in chamber and 2 on Opposition front bench.

An hour of Commons business would have been sufficient for eulogies from MPs, followed by one hour debates about bedroom tax, ATOS assessments, youth unemployment etc.

John, can I just say the same as I posted on another thread, no politician put us on a 3 day week, The miners did that through on going industrial action thus holding the country and fellow citizens/workers to ransom (sod the rest of you I'm all right Jack) attitude

and

Churchill led us through our darkest hour in war time

Thatcher led us through our darkest hour in peace time

Finding it hard to understand why the OP has been RR'd...whether some like it or not this song has been released and is selling so it's a relevant enough thread ...

Gosh John, you certainly seem to have a detailed insight into Mrs T's family relationships, though why this should be relevant to her time as our PM I 'm blessed if I know!!! I wouldn't have thought that is anybody's business but the family concerned, but there you go perhaps I'm wrong and we should all concern ourselves with other peoples's family life! I think the Queen can decide for herself who she mixes with which is frankly nothing to do with any of us least of all you! I appreciate that you have clearly led a blameless life, so perhaps you do find it hard to understand that other lesser mortals do have family strife and make mistakes, mostly within the privacy of our own homes and not in the public glare.

Pathetic, eh, Muffy.

Re Churchill - there are some in Coventry who believe he knew the city was going to be blitzed but did nothing to warn them because it would betray that the code had been broken.

Evidence for this is very slim but nonetheless some believe it and didn't grieve for him when he died either.

Roy - I disagree - Thatcher led us *to* our darkest hour in peace time

Mayfield Report 11 Apr 2013 10:42

I am very much on the fence where Mr Thacher is concerned I have to admit I was one that voted her in, I have geat respect for her as a leader but felt she went to far in the end.

As a member of a non militant trade union I felt that those who constantly held the country to ransom needed taking down a peg or two, but she was not content with that and permanently biased the power balance toward the companies.

Now my kids work all the hours their bosses expect, way over their 40 hour week without the slightest additional payment. Despite that manufacturing in the UK was decimated.

On balance she does deserve respect as having more "balls" than any politician since.

As for those celebrating her death, I can understand a miner who lost everything as a result of her policies feeling hostile, but I am infuriated by the archaistic oiks we saw using it as an excuse to riot and steal considering they were not even in their dads underpants at the time!

That's the rant for this week over

I'm glad some of the posts on this thread have been referred - nothing to do with me before anybody suggests.

Whatever she may have or have not done there is a respect for the dead that is lacking. All the vitriol barbs is it really necessary.

GinN Report 11 Apr 2013 10:57

A lot of those celebrating and partying over Mrs. Thatcher's death are young people who were not even born, or were small children when she was in power. They can't really know about life under her policies - they are just jumping on the anarchy bandwagon.
I find the whole celebration thing disgusting and nauseating.

I agree with you NanaSue, sadly some people seem to think it is necessary. There is a lack of common decency these days :-(
GinN, the young ones have possibly been brought up in homes where disrespect and hatred is the norm :-(
