Stands shoulder to shoulder with Hayley and her supporters on this one :-)

I just want it over and done with so the protestors can get back to their fulfilling and productive lives, and the Thatcher family can begin to grieve.

Mrs T is seen overseas and by many in this country as a great leader. Money is spent unwisely in many, many areas.

In this case, I feel the critics may have a point but on the other hand,"weighing up the cost of everything and not the value." Pomp and ceremony is something which arguably, we lead the world.

Happy days

If this funeral was arranged a few years ago than MT should have paid for it then.

We the taxpayer shouldn't have to pay either for the funeral or towards it.

A private Cremation is what she wanted so instead of all the pomp and ceremony it should be a private service before the cremation just family.

A memorial service a few weeks after the funeral would have been appropiate. .

Wonder how much it costs per head of the population of this country? Not a lot I expect.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 14 Apr 2013 13:47

that's beside the point Merlin - if there's £10 milliom going spare I'd rather it was spent on other far more deserving and necessary things

my parents and husband were as precious to me as no doubt she was to her family, but even if I were a multi-millionaire, no way would I have considered spending a fraction of that on their funerals - their funerals were tasteful and meaningful, which is all that is needed to say a fond farewell to loved ones

This article was published in the Mirror. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/margaret-thatcher-tax-snatcher-mystery-1828441

I know tax avoidance is not against the law but why should the British tax-payer fund the funeral of someone who has safeguarded her families inheritance and therefore not contributed to the nation's coffers. :-|

Well ask the Taxman for your share back if you don,t wish to contribute,

It doesn't surprise me at all, Joeva, she had all that stashed away secretly and we're paying for her funeral?

One last slap in the face for the "little people" from Thatcher, eh?

Merlin

Merlin Report 14 Apr 2013 14:06

Just another thought though, I wonder how much it has cost and still costing the taxpayer for Tony Blairs Security Team and other ex Honourable Members.?? :-(

Lyndi

Lyndi Report 14 Apr 2013 14:19

Tony Blair is costing taxpayers more than £400,000 a year despite building up a £30million fortune since leaving Downing Street.
Figures have revealed that multi-millionaire Mr Blair is drawing the maximum Prime Ministerial pension – worth about £70,000 a year.
The gold-plated pension comes on top of the £115,000 allowance that Mr Blair received last year to support his ‘public duties’.
Then there is his security team, which is estimated to cost at least £250,000 a year.
The revelation will anger taxpayers at a time of unprecedented public spending cuts and double-dip recession.

Of what relevance is that, Merlin? Tax-dodger Thatcher got the same security after she was sacked by her friends - why shouldn't Blair after he resigned?

We're talking about Thatcher's funeral, I thought.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 14 Apr 2013 14:31

Well she was in the taxation department and her son has a background of making money out of illegal deals and her signature on the contract,,,,Denis was a multi millionaire.

I thought that Belgravia was the most expensive housing in London and was part of the Duke of Marlborough owned Estates in London ?

Merlin

Merlin Report 14 Apr 2013 14:34

Plus Costs,If you lump it all together not much difference. Also, \how do you know she was a tax dodger?or do you have inside information about that.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 14 Apr 2013 15:01

It was tongue in cheek following revelations about Thatcher's tax avoidance, Merlin.

Still not understanding why you tried to switch the attention to Blair on a thread about Thatcher's funeral.

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 14 Apr 2013 15:03

My own personal view is that the funeral should have been a semi-private event, with government representatives, a representative of the Queen, and perhaps a Guard of Honour of Pensioners from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a place she had a close association with, followed at a later date with a memorial service at either, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, or the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Palace of Westminster.

Unfortunately everything following the announcement of Baroness Thatcher's death has been hijacked by the protesters and the government. I am trying to avoid bringing politics into the equation, and that is not east, but I am trying to get my head round, why an event on this scale was agreed to.

What I cannot get my head round is:-

1) Baroness Thatcher died on Monday 08 April 2013, Parliament was in recess yet David Cameron recalled Parliament, why, could the tributes not wait until Parliament returned from the Easter recess?

2) Following the announcement of her death. it was widely reported that there were going to be a lot of protests in the days running up to and including the day of the funeral, some reports said some could lead to riots, yet a public, expensive, and extravagant funeral on the scale of a State Funeral, was announced, why when everybody knew, not only was this asking for trouble, it was inviting trouble?

During Baroness Thatcher's time in office it is alleged she courted controversy, sadly it appears that in death she is doing the same.

These various events will cost the tax-payer considerable sums of money and this whole sorry saga of events needs to be looked into, as something is going on here behind the scenes.

Regarding Lindi's post on Mr Blair.
Perhaps the security protection for ex pm's should be means tested the same a benifits for everyone else?

By the by, the measles epidemic in wales.
Had a certain prime minister when he was asked if his kids had had the MMR jab confirmed they had, so confirming he had full confidence in it many more would have taken it up.
Now I wonder why he felt it would be so wrong to reveal the details of his childrens treatment to any one!
