Here in Canada, we have a mix of "social" medical care (as the Americans would call it) and private.
and boy, am I glad when I read stories such as Dizzi's and Suzanne's!
The Americans wanted Canada to do away with the "social" medical care when the 2 countries were negotiating a Free Trade alliance back in the 80s. They saw it as an unnecessary "perk", and causing inequality with the US system.
Yep .................... it did cause inequality!!
However, they quickly abandoned the idea when it was pointed out, very forcibly, that all negotiations would be end if they insisted. It was a non-negotiable item as far as Canada, and Canadians, were concerned!
Our "social" medical care involves anyone with an income above the poverty level paying a monthly amount to the provincial Medicare Programme.
In our case, 2 retired adults, that is approximately $120 (ca £60-65) a month.
For 1 person it is $66.50 (ca £35-40), and $133.00 (ca £70) for a family of three or more.
That allows us free access to GPs, with appointments usually taking only a couple of days, or even same day if an "emergency" such as cystitis, inflamed wound, sprained ankle, etc.
Use of walk-in clinics if out of town, out of hours for your doctor, or you are not registered with a family doctor
GP referral to all specialists, in their office or hospital clinic, for free
Free operations, anaesthetists, physiotherapy, etc, and all drugs while in hospital.
Free hospital stay if in a 4 bed or larger ward (the largest rooms have either 5 or 6 patients in BC). Each room has a bathroom (toilet and hand basin)
Wait times for operations, to see a specialist, etc vary ............... often depending on specialty or time of year.
I won't lie ................... there can be long wait times for orthopedic operations (knees, hips), for non-emergency heart, etc
We pay for ..................
drugs from the pharmacy
eye tests by an optician or optometrist (but not if we have been referred to a specialist by them or the GP), and glasses
per day cost for a hospital room with fewer than 4 beds. ................ I think currently it is about $100 for a semi-private room (2 beds, shared bathroom with toilet and hand basin). A private room (1 bed, own bathroom) is about double. TV and phone hook-ups are additional.
However ............ if the hospital puts you in a private or semi-private room either because your treatment demands it, or there are no spaces in a 4 bed room ............. you will not be charged for the upgrade.
Physiotherapy, podiatry, dentists, etc are not covered by MSP, and we have to pay the set fees.
Many people have Extended Health Insurance coverage, either privately or through a work-related plan .................... and this insurance will pay at least a percentage of those extra costs.
The cost of our Extended Health Insurance is another $133 a month
Dental Insurance costs another $85 a month
.......... so we spend a total of just over $339 a month for medical and dental insurance ................... or just over $4,070 a year.
It's well worth it!
The mastectomy I had 18 months ago involved 1 night in hospital ................. and it cost me about $30. That was the amount left over after our Extended Health reimbursed me their percentage of the cost of a 2 bed ward. In 1995, I opted for a 4 bed ward for the first mastectomy, and was in for 6 days ................. cost $0.
It would have been the same in 2011, except that I decided I would try the 2 bed ward, feeling I might need more peace to try to get some sleep (that didn't actually work out!).
Finally, we can claim any non-reimbursed medical costs when we fill out our Income Tax forms .......... and will get a refund on tax paid as long as the medical costs amount to more than 3% of taxable income.
People below the poverty line get coverage for all medical costs ..................... dentistry is another matter.
The best thing is we do not wait anywhere near as long as you do for most things.

Dizzi
Glad you are OK
I'll get back to you about that other thing ......... I've been a bit busy the last few days
|
I hope you get an appointment soon, Gwen.
There's no excuse for long waiting lists, a young friend graduated with First Class Honours as a physio last summer and she still can't get a permanent job.
