At last I felt well enough to go out! So yesterday I took her wedding and engagement rings and sold them (part exchange gave me more) but purchased for my g.daughter a pair of diamond studs in white gold.

Hope she gets a real surprise at the weekend! Been meaning to do this for over a year now. They have gift wrapped them so prettily I cannot open them to have another look!

How lovely Chris, I'm sure any daughter would be delighted to receive them. My two daughters in their 30s both have white gold jewellery.

Oh you are a good grandma,a lovely lasting gift,

pity you didnt do it a bit sooner Chris for a better deal as gold has dropped by £2 20 --£2-40 per gram in the last 2 weeks, hang on to any more it may well rise again to a good price.

Kay I have been watching it since beg of year. Best price was about mid March - however weather was not good for me to go out in.

Am not in a rush but when price is right I am taking jewellry that either I have not worn for a long time or cannot wear since I broke wrists. I can no longer cope with clasps.

Personally I do not like white gold - looks like silver to me!!!!

She is a good kid and has not been home since New Year, busy busy with new job and flat. It will be good to see her.

OH was worried about g.son - 'we always treat them the same'!!!

What a lovely thing to do and how fantastic as a keepsake.

Not something that I would ever thought of, but then I don´t have children or grandchildren (obviously). I am not sure what I would, as a grandchild, which I would have preferred. I think because of my sense of history the rings, but to have something modern in exchange is lovely idea.
I am sure that you will treat your grandson soon, and had they stayed as rings they would have just gone to the granddaughter.

Thing is Uzzi - daughter switched to white gold some years ago, g.daughter wears silver apart from white gold watch her dad bought for her 21st birthday so if the rings had been left - that is what would have happened - chucked in the back of a drawer and my dau. is so careless - that is why I have bypassed her to g.daughter.

Example - SIL bought his bride very expensive pearl earrings to wear on their wedding day. Couple of years later she bought a cheap pair of earrings - changed them right away, put the pearls in the paper bag, cleaned out her bag a couple of days later.........................thats right!!!

Chris I really think it´s a fantastic idea. It has given me something to think about as I have my Mums 3 wedding rings and engagements plus my 2 wedding rings and 3 engagement rings.
My engagement ring now I would not sell as it is an antique but the rest well

No you definitely did right, it just isn´t something I would have thought of and to be honest when I give Mum´s rings away I think I would have been a bit upset if they had been sold and exchanged. Doing it your way makes so much sense.
Well done

My Mam left me quite a number of rings. They include wedding rings from my great grandmother, grandmother and great aunt, as well as her own original one. I wouldn't part with those ones, they are heirlooms.
There is a beautiful opal and diamond ring, and her 5 diamond engagement ring is gorgeous - these I will keep and hand down to my daughter.
I think I will probably sell the rest, though they only seem to be of scrap value at the moment, and gold is declining in value. However, they are nice to have - maybe I will keep them all.

If you feel sentimental about inherited jewellry but it is not to your taste and yet you do not wish to sell them, there is another choice.

Have the pieces made into something of your own design - the jeweller I went to offers this and I know of at least 2 young designers working from home will offer this service also.

Sis has mums wedding ring I have her engagement ring and dad's signet ring he wore on his wedding finger..I I wouldn't part with them for the the world.

My children wouldn't appreciate the fact that the were their grandparents.
They hardly knew their maternal grandparents ,such an age difference,

However I have my MIL's 2 wedding rings, she was widowed at 21,and my dau absolutely dotted on her, and same with MIL............
So it may be an idea to ask her if she wishes to keep the rings or to have something made of them
I am a size J /K as was MIL dau has larger fingers so she can't wear them.
