How did he end up here? Was he here by chance? Was It his fault? Did society conspire against him?

Who were these other people around him?
Why did they ask for papers? What are papers? Times? Guardian? Telegraph?

eRRolSheep

He learned pretty quick. You do on the street. Papers are currency, the one thing you can exchange or pass to a friend in exchange for a sip of cider.

Cider. The 21st century four star. The 21st century elixir. Nothing better - pass me a drop.

A drop is never enough but it helps to get you through the day. Each day is the same. Society passes by not noticing, or at least pretending not to notice.

Subways? Well, a subway is where I beg. A subway is what you part eat for lunch before discarding half of it for the rats in the subway because you have no time to consume it all.

He shocked back to reality - if that is indeed what it was. Where was he and how did he get here?

This town? Not his town? How did he get here? Oh yes - a quick hitch down the M6 before the stubble grew too much and cars passed by just like the people crossing to the other side of the street now.

Underneath the arches sounded good. Was it? No not really. But camaraderie was good oh and the papers came in handy and the drop of best, finest, strongest cider.

It could have tasted like pss but to him it was nectar after that long journey - a journey that seemed to continue for ever.

Then fright. The sun dips. The moon rises. To most of us maybe a beautiful scene.
To him absolute horror. Reality. No bed. No evening meal. No loving family.
