I changed my name from ErrolTheSheep to ErrolSheep - does that count?
Or did it fool everyone?

Rambling Report 12 May 2013 13:17

I think it's also important to realise that some posters may be reacting to their 'history' with another who has since chosen to change their board name, and so appears to think that will generate a state of general amnesia in onlookers.

You can't say something nasty or upsetting or untrue under the name 'Fred' and then expect people to forget because you have changed the name to 'Sam'.

Lyndi Report 12 May 2013 12:54

Genealogy site or not there really is no need and this is no place for the rudeness, sniping and downright nastiness that is seen frequently on the boards. Most of us would not behave like that in the real world so why on here?

TheBlackKnight

TheBlackKnight Report 12 May 2013 10:30

That's logic PP

IGP the thing is this is not a school playground, it's a General Chat Board on a Genealogy web site filled with adults not baby's or children stood playing, It's about time some people should see that.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 11 May 2013 18:43

IGP, Surly the point you make would benefit from having a reported thread locked because it would stop anyone from being "singled out for attack" If the thread is locked then no one can add comment so cannot attack, Then the only form of attack would be the constant reporting of threads/posts of the said victim which would then make it easier for GR to identify offenders without having to go through several pages of who said what

There is no need to lock the thread and YES, some members DO come across as cold, critical and pedantic to the outsider. The biggest problem is that they can't or won't admit to it.

terryj also makes a very good point too - some people on this board are singled out for attack on whatever they post. I know....! been there and still getting attacked now.

He goes on to say It is like a school playground situation someone gets picked on and the rest join in so they wont be picked on next.

Sums it up to a tee.

Well I have never done it before , but I have contacted Gene's ........!!

It would be very difficult to block them via their IP address depending on whether it is static or dynamic.
Plus there is nothing to stop them using a different computer.

GenealogyResearchAssistance

GenealogyResearchAssistance Report 11 May 2013 16:40

As a free member I reported a thread to protect an elderly man whose details where being bandied about to someone who claimed to be his grandson. A little back work showed that the poster was not his grandson, nor his great grandson, or uncle. The relationship was very tenuous and I felt that this elderly, possibly vulnerable gentleman's security was being put at risk, all in the interests of genealogy.

Under the circumstances I have detailed above then I disagree with the removal of free members being able to report a thread/post. However, where those reports are malicious then the ISP address of that person should be blocked.

TheBlackKnight

TheBlackKnight Report 11 May 2013 13:57

One thing I have appreciated from GR in the last eight months is when my postings have been RR'd for no reason & I've received my email saying it contravened T&C's etc I have asked them to look again & I'm quite confident that every time I have received an apology as it need not have been removed.

I just find it unfortunate that they say they cannot reinstate the posts when I have seen others reinstated. I hope this is just a glitch that can be sorted soon as it would steal the RRers thunder.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 11 May 2013 13:37

I would hope that Genes will review your posts to them and take appropriate action if not already done that in past, BK. There is no place on these boards for people out to cause upset and trouble.

And I would say that you deserve action if you have clear evidence, BK.

TheBlackKnight

TheBlackKnight Report 11 May 2013 13:20

I have, I do & I will continue to do so but personaly I don't see a riddle?

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 11 May 2013 13:11

BK. If anyone feels that another poster is winding them up, all they have to do is write to Genes with evidence. It sounds like you have a lot of evidence against one or more posters.

Do something about it. Riddles don't really help to cleanse these sites of trouble makers who make it uncomfortable for others to post freely.

TheBlackKnight

TheBlackKnight Report 11 May 2013 11:31

If the thread was to be locked then they should also make it that each posting on that thread can not be edited but the posters can still edit on other threads if they need to. If the thread is allowed to continue then it gives the member a chance to sort out any problem before GR have to tell anybody off by the quote of Terms & Conditions & the hand out any bans to anybody for any misunderstanding or misreading of a posting by an individual.

When you have a members that will come on the chat board & say he/she comes on to wind as many people up as possible, & then repeatedly does just that, I think GR need to do something about that on behalf of all the other members.

Kense

Kense Report 11 May 2013 10:59

The trouble with the like minded theory is that both threads were quickly reported and when I saw them there were only a few posts and the original messages had been hidden and a reason for the report given.

Subsequently many posted saying how awful it was, presumably without knowing exactly what had been posted unless they were informed by PMs. That looks like a digital pile-on to an outsider.

It has been suggested that when the first post of a thread is reported the threads shoiuld be locked until a decision is made.

terryj

terryj Report 11 May 2013 10:01

i certainly feel that some people on this board are singled out for attack on whatever they post
it is like a school playground situation someone gets picked on and the rest join in so they wont be picked on next

i gad a pm with regards to one of my posts from a member who said they read the board but never post because of treatment they had had in the past

TheBlackKnight

TheBlackKnight Report 11 May 2013 10:00

I agree with Rambling Rose

It's not a gang but people who have INDIVIDUALLY come to the same conclusion that a post is un-acceptable & so many can't be so wrong can they? even after so many have said so on a tread?

plus
I think the RR button needs to be taken away from the none paying member in order for GR/Brightsolid to have any control it.

Sally Report 10 May 2013 21:32

but ns you have stated in this thread not to report any body using the wrong board

Perhaps its just a personal *Observation*,?,,,!as others also have *Observation* views.

Rambling

Rambling Report 10 May 2013 15:44

I have PMd Natasha and made the suggestion she lock this thread...as a member using the terms "cold, critical and pedantic" as a description of other members is unlikely to encourage anyone to "be nice" and won't promote a friendly atmosphere.
