Imported Gedcom - people missing...

Hi,

Bit of advice please if anyone can help me.

I have a tree with a couple of hundred people on, my step sister is just starting a tree and wants to import mine and build on it. She has subscribed to Genes Reunited and I sent her my tree as an exported Gedcom file. She wasn't too sure what to do, so I have been trying to get this imported for her by logging in as her.

The file imports fine, and her tree shows the same total number of relatives as me; however on my tree I have her father's parents, aunties, uncles etc etc when viewing logged in as my step sister they are not there.

I have changed root relation on her tree to her, and even to my step father, but nothing seems to work.

Probably something obvious, but it is driving me mad.

Any help gratefully received... thanks
Karen

From a fairly IT illiterate person, a couple of basic suggestions which you may have tried anyway.

Log out then log back in again.

Ctrl and F5 when you make any changes eg root person.

Hope you can sort it out and that the gedcom hasn't got mangled in the transfer!

Thanks for reply; I have logged out and in again, refreshed, deleted tree, imported again.... deleted tree, re exported my Gedcom and re imported and then gone round in circles again... :s

It's so strange, the total number in tree means that they should show, but they are not there....

Have you looked at the 'full tree' view? There might be some floating around unattached to anyone else.

Looking at that view in my own, I have an Ann Dodds and unknown spouse, then the same Ann Dodds m Hugh Barr - the Ann Dodds to Barr is a duplicate, the couple free floating in space

Yes, looking at full tree. When I search for my step dad's mother there are no results; however if I view the tree as a list the whole family is there......

Sadly the Gedcom is not a precise tool, and often data is missed out in transferring.

It was designed for use by the Mormon church and had proved to be quite a useful tool for the family genealogist, but it does have its faults.

The only thing to do is re-enter the missing bits.

Another problem is with the dates and depending on the format you have written them as it can change them as well.

When I transferred mine from here I literally lost about 10 relatives, worked out who they were and re-rentered them, very time consuming but a whole lot quicker than doing it all from scratch.

I just searched for someone who isn't showing on her tree, but is on mine... the box on her tree shows where Great Auntie should be, and her details come up at the expansion panel option on the side, there is no box on tree.
Unfortunately the branch of 30 or so people that she particularly wants to see are the only ones missing. I have given her access to view my tree, so at least she can see the full structure on there - will let her copy as much as she likes...
BTW - I also thought about copying and pasting missing individuals from one tree to the other as per Genes Help page, but cannot see how you can copy - I only have add, edit or delete on each person.
Thanks for all help and suggestions.

You'll only see the 'copy' function when you are viewing a tree you've been given access to, not one where you are signed in. The little boxes available to you on someone elses tree are 'details' and 'copy'.

The copy function ought to work, but the paste doesn't. :-0
