my brother has a degenerative brain condition called cerrabellum,he also has short term memory loss he is only 56yrs old.
as I am his carer I am with him quite a bit, today he was asking me if I remember when we were children and our grandmother used to work in a soup kitchen,it was open during the day,mum would take us in to see her and she would give us soup in a cup and a finger roll.
it alway's tasted wonderful,he keep's bringing up all the thing's we did as children, plus the naughty thing's also.
it is lovely to re-live these memories but also very tragic to know he cannot remember what he did 30 mins ago.

you just never know what is around the corner.

enjoy everyday life is to short to miserable.

Sorry to hear of your brother's conditions and so young.

My husband suffers from short term memory loss ( a brain haemorrhage in 1996)
He often goes back to his childhood but as I didn't know him then it is very difficult to share these times with him.
The very sad thing is he doesn't remember very much of our daughters early life.

As you say enjoy every day because you don't know what life is going to throw at you.

Martyn, so sorry to read of your brother. It is good that he can remember the lovely childhood you so obviously had. I remember the last time I saw my mother, she spoke about when she was young. Looking back now, I'm glad she remembered her carefree years.

as you say, live for today, no one knows what tomorrow will bring and the nice thing is he seems to be happy in spite of his obvious problems - I hope you are able to enjoy many lovely memories with him <3 <3

it is really strange,he can reel off his national insurance number & date of birth,as he moved after his illness started he cannot tell you were he live's, when we go out in the car to the doctor's or hospital he say's the same thing every time,i haven't got a clue where I am and there are some very nice houses round here,

his best mate died 2 week's ago,he came down to see my brother 3 week's before his death,3 day's ago my brother said I wish I had gone to see him before he died, when I explained his friend had come to see him and stayed with him for the weekend he went very quiet and after a few mins he said I never knew that.
he looked bewildered.

Hello Martyn
So sorry to read about your brother, he is young to have this, how long has he had it?

My sister has short term memory problems, we've been told she has a personality disorder which effects the memory and also causes her to manipulate people, she could have had this since childhood or her teens.....but her husband died 3 yrs ago so this could effect her too, as she's now very lonely.
Its all very strange because she's had 2 memory tests and they are both high scoring, 87 and 95!!! also a scan has revealed nothing!
This has become very difficult to deal with, l don't just me but for her and the rest of the family.
Its so strange how all these memory disorders can be so different
You are so right about enjoying every day, because you don't know whats around the next corner:((((
You are obviously close to your brother...take care both of you:)

yesterday was my brother's 57th birthday, ahh what to get him,

I sent for some printed family tree to fill in,

I just put in the parent's grandparent's and so on,i only put date's of birth and death's ,I also framed it and framed a copy of the family coat of arms,
well he sat for hour's looking at these, going over all the detail's,i have not seen him take a interest in anything for quite a long time,
as he has severe short term memory loss he keep's looking at them, now I will wait as he will start asking question's about family member's and were they came from.

I do not think I could have got him a better present,it only cost the price of the frames and he will have something to stimulate his brain.

I am so pleased he like it,

Well done Martyn, a perfect gift for him :-)

Another good on that helps stimulate memories are songs and photos from your childhood.

Mum used to love them, I photocopied pictures and photos and wrote the names of the places, people and pets underneath to help her remember who was who etc.

Well done Martyn and belated birthday wishes to your brother.

What a great idea for his present. I did something similar for my Dad,anything that stimulates memories is a good thing.

Sue, your poor brother, how confusing for him, and no doubt frustrating for you, it must take patience. I hope they can sort out some good pain relief for him, he can do without the pain on top of everything else. <3
