Awww lovely, Rose...a nice bit of melancholia is good for the soul! The Fureys sang a song for my mother once (in a Dublin pub)....When You and I were Young Maggie..she never forgot it. And a bit of trivia, Barney from the Dubliners was at my brother's 21st Birthday party! :-D :-D

How strange BC I was just listening to 'When you and I were young Maggie' :-) I saw the Fureys about 30 (!) years ago in Dartford ... lol doesn't have the romantic clout of Dublin does it!

Another Fureys song, which has me sniffing :-(

I had forgotten that lovely song...think I will suggest it at our next singing group session, it would be great to harmonize.

My very favourite by the Fureys is Fields of France (you know the one I mean) ...such a sad song and beautifully sung.. XX BC

This song always brings a big lump to my throat.......

Finbar Furey playing The Coolin on the Uilleann pipes is spine-tingling.

He is a very gifted man, I love most of the songs he sings.

Haha, RR, you beat me to it!!!

Claddagh, such a beautiful song. It was played on the pipes at my mother's funeral. Not a dry eye in the church <3

Claddagh Report 22 May 2013 18:13

RR, I can well believe that there wasn't a "dry eye in the church"....your mother had a lovely send off, bless her.

I have a job to keep the tears back when listening to several songs sung by the wonderful Luke Kelly....here are titles of 3 of them:
The Night Visiting Song, which was his last stage appearance before he died, which was shortly after. Song For Ireland-last recording just before he died. The Unquiet Grave...always gets to me...there are a lot more though.

Claddagh it was BC's mother's funeral not my mum's ( A tape of Phil Coulter playing 'Danny Boy' was played at my mum's can't listen to that yet)

'The Minstrel Boy' was the first Irish song I heard as a very young child, on a 78 record ( probably my grandfather's I think).

Whoops, sorry for that,BC & RR,fingers clicked faster than this aged brain...

I can't listen to Danny Boy without a tear or two either. There is a song buzzing around in my head for a long time, which always chokes me..My uncle sang this together with an aunt....called My Own Lovely Lee....gives me goose bumps just thinking of the words even now...sentimental but lovely lyrics.

No worries, Claddagh. I love Luke Kelly and my favourite is Raglan Road. Another favourite of mine is Paul Brady. It's not melancholy but he has a great voice....

I love Irish music, there's something about it that tugs at your heartstrings. I saw The Fureys and Davey Arthur in Boston, Lincs. last year - they were great!

Claddagh Report 22 May 2013 20:01

Ahhhh, how great it is to hear that you are a fan of Paul Brady too, I love his version of Aurthur McBride....
Then you must also know and like him singing The Homes of Donegal?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk8foQOQVk0

Have met Luke Kelly 3 times..he was a truly lovely man, friendly, kind and charismatic, with a great voice....I laid flowers on his grave and a card from another fan in 2006.
It is so nice to 'meet' other fans of your favourites.

While you are on You Tube take a look at Derek McCormack who was singer with Barleycorn.

He had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard and died far too young at 51.

Cavan Girl is really well worth a listen.

Claddagh

Claddagh Report 23 May 2013 11:16

He certainly had a great voice Sharron, thank you for telling me about him, am always pleased to 'find'new singers, didn't a lot of great singers die far too young.

Another McCormack, Jack this time, was a very popluar singer way back...his rendering of Macushla can still reduce me to tears. The sound is very old-fashioned now.

What do you think of this song by the late Tony Cuffe? He also died of cancer, far too young.

Sharron

Sharron Report 23 May 2013 11:34

Mustn't forget Paddy Reilly who is currently with the Dubliners I believe.

Wasn't ever so keen on TheGrand Affair but I am playing Gallipolli as I write this.Makes me cry.

Derek McCormack played with the Fureys at the last.He was good friends with Paul Furey who pre-deceased him by a few months.

Such a sad time.
