WATCHING TRAVELLERS ON THE TELEVISION PROGRAMME .

They want to keep their way of life , travelling !

IO have no problem with this , apart from !

They want land to camp on , why should councils provide it FREE OF CHARGE , can you live on land Free ?

Let them buy land at various places , where they can travell to and camp on their own land .

THEY DRIVE NEW MOTORS - HAVE NEW CARAVANS - PAY THOUSANDS OF POUNDS FOR THEIR WEDDINGS - PAY NO TAX !

You try doing this !

Live and let Live , but be fair, Then you will get RESPECT from many, if not All.

I agree with you the land should be rented to them but there again rises the problem where is the land to be from what I see on the news no one wants them nearby as they leave the place in a dreadful state and cause no end of problems

I don't know about the rest of the UK, but in Wales the Local Authority are now obliged by law to provide sites to accommodate gypsy families.
It seems as soon as Councils allocate a site that would have facilities like electricity, water, toilets etc, the local residents are up in arms with the "Not in my backyard" syndrome. This is quite understandable, given people's fears, and the bad reputation some travellers have attracted in the past.

Very often the Councils show little sensitivity to local residents in the location of these sites. Sometimes placing them very close or adjacent to residential estates.

I do know of one site that was provided a few years ago, out of town, so no bother to anyone. The site appears to be well run - the established families pay rent, and Council Tax. The children attend the local school.

It does seem odd to me, that some describe themselves as travellers, yet want to be on a permanent site.
However, it is their way of life, for generations. They have no wish to change that way of life, and whether society likes it or not they have to be accommodated somewhere, instead of being hounded from place to place.

If Councils would provide sites in sensible locations, and the gypsies made to pay their way for the facilities provided, then the problem would be resolved, instead of them turning up overnight in car parks and farmers fields, causing mayhem.

Really it just boils down to common sense from both sides.

Years ago the council where I lived at that time provided a purpose built site with all the mod cons, toilets, showers wash room, electric street lighting, a laundry with washing machines and drying room, Year one, all pipes and cables ripped out and sold for scrap along with washing machines, The council replaced and repaired the site every year for 8 years at great expense to the rate payer before closing it down, At that time I know for a fact these gypsies where all claiming benefits and working, If we all claimed benefits and worked whilst not paying taxes then i'm sure we would all be quite wealthy.

Most so called Gypsies/Travelers today don't actualy travel like they used to and most stay in the same place for years so just why these people claim traveling as a way of life is beyond me, And by the way I'm not anti Gypsies or Travelers in my younger days i new several real Gypsies families and had more respect for them than some none Gypsies families, you couldnt wish to meet a more genuine honest hard working and honourable people but sadly that type of Gypsies/Travelers no longer exist in this country

Its called jumping on the bandwagon,these progammes made by channel 4,are mainly about Irish travellers,their not true Gypsys,most of them have big homes back in Eire which they go back to in winter,while here they pay no rates-taxes-or insurances,do all their so-called building work for cash only.hence ....jumping on the bandwagon.
