Don't know who she was John lol, she was just a girl who was upset because her phone was out of charge and she couldn't let her boyfriend know she would be late meeting him.

I see an old red telephone box often ,its kept beautiful........lovely flowers planted round it,shiney windows,,,,,and its in use,

Although they can be of great use,where they are often situated doesnt compare to a mobile in an emergency when someone is well off the beaten track......

Is your friend Rachel Yankey perhaps, Rose? She is a famous England lady footballer and would therefore play away quite a lot.

Phone boxes. yes I have used one recently, and though I rarely carry a mobile with me (except when away from home for a few days) , I have sometimes lent my phone for someone to make a call when there was no public phone available...so there is still need for them.

( that is another story re lending phone as I then got return calls from the person's partner asking what she was up to and if she was 'playing away')

I don't have a mobile phone, but haven't used a phone box for quite a while.


There are alot in a reclaimation yard near Canterbury, but not cheap if you want your own red box.

Cynthia. Metropolitan sounds very nice. I like it outside too, and am quite keen to see it inside. Like "Mersey Funnel" better than PW but know what you mean. I have a brother in law who was brought up in the beautiful Dingle of Liverpool and, when sorting out his friends aged about 5, he was asked if he was a Mick or a Billy Boy. Because his name was William he said Billy Boy.

And he has remained a Billy Boy to this day. Even though both his parents were nominal Catholics :-) :-) :-)

Trying I am. Trying to write this from a post box in Cilgerran. Someone with a frying pan and hot poker has forced me inside and locked me in. Attractive but fierce and determined young lady.

I think that is great what they have done, Sue. I do often spot these boxes in people's gardens and some are in pristine condition and make a lovely feature.

There is one in front garden of Rosemary Squires house in Trebanog. How I wish that house could be turned into a museum. Her popularity is returning now that there has been a recent play about her life with Roger Moore. And what a lovely voice she had.

There is a red phone box inside Liverpool Cathedral. Quite apt really :-)


John, Paddy's Wigwam is as synonymous to Liverpool as coal is to Newcastle. Absolutely nothing offensive about it. It's been affectionately known as that since the very beginning. It's a beautiful building inside, very different to it's counterpart along Hope Street.


I live in the Liverpool diocese so have been familiar with both buildings for many years. I can remember my late mother-in-law and her friend standing with a tea trolley and tea urn at the back of the cathedral serving tea to visitors. Now they have fantastic refreshment facilities - hoping to go there in a couple of weeks.


Anyway, back to phone boxes...........

I do think we need them, not everyone has a mobile phone, or if they have the signal can be dodgy.

Ours takes coins or cards and although not in much use. it does no harm sitting there until it is needed :-)

Sue. I see things very differently to you. I have put up a number of threads like this one of NanaSue's over the months.

Between the sixth and the tenth post (ie when thread is just starting to motor and get interesting) one of this little group put up a post to try and send the thread into the sidings or buffers.

Then their friends pile in (bit of fun in boring lives, I suppose) with same boring and very predictable messing about that they do on their "fun" threads. Then we have to wait about another 20 posts till they get bored again, leave us alone and we can get on with thread.

They have not the slightest interest in this sort of thread, in my view. I hardly ever go on one of their fun threads. I went on Sizzling Saturday or whatever today to make my point - and when the worm turns and they get sidetracked on their own threads, they don't like it up em Captain Mainwaring.

And now I have quite forgotten what this particular thread was all about. Oh yes, red telephone boxes.

There are quite a few phone boxes that still take cash..I have 3 within a mile of my home that still take cash and nor vandalised.

So it is ok to now say Patrick's Tent rather than Paddy's Wigwam?

As a person with strong religious connections I always make a point of visiting any famous place of worship wherever I go - both for religious reasons and for the wonderful splendid architecture

Sir Frederick Ernest Gibberd (7 January 1908 – 9 January 1984) was the architect of the Mersey Funnel or Patrick's Tent. Have never been in the Metropolitan Cathedral but it does look impressive.

Have been inside the Anglican one and that is well worth a visit. One memory I had was sitting in a large archway with my brother in law. We must have been 60 feet apart at least. He told me to put my ear against a pillar and I could hear him whispering from the distance away. The acoustics are something else.

Have never been inside St Pauls in London either, but folk have told me you have similar acoustic experiences there :-) :-)
