OK. Will tell you the story. There were 3 of us lads playing up in Newcastle in a band called the Railroaders. I decided to go south for success and finished up in Cheshunt. The other two, Brian Rankin and Bruce, eventually followed me down.

We (Brian, Bruce and me, Johnny Horlicks) met a nice lad Harry with a fantastic voice and quiff. We all filled shelves in Tesco, whose Head office was based in Edmonton at the time, and moved to Cheshunt the following year.

Because we had all drifted from north-east, India and Wales, we called our new group The Drifters.

I was doing well with Tesco, so left the band. They (Brian alias Hank and Bruce) decided, because they had been my shadows and followed me to Cheshunt, to change group name again to The Shadows. And they did very well.

I am very modest about part I played. But my friend Bruce Cripps (who only lived in Bognor for a very short time and was always known as a Geordie boy) changed his name to Welch to please me. :-)

Stage names [edit]

During the late 1950s in the UK many pop stars were expected to undergo a name change to a 'stage' name, (as in the case of Billy Fury or Adam Faith). Several members of the original "Cliff Richard and The Shadows" line-up changed their birth names to stage names; Harry Webb became Cliff Richard, Brian Rankin became Hank Marvin, Terrence Harris became Jet Harris, and Bruce Cripps became Bruce Welch. Subsequently the names "Cliff Richard" and "Hank Brian Marvin" were confirmed by deed poll

Could I respectfully ask you John not to add to this thread any more. You are neither wanted nor desired and I don't want you to spoil this thread like you have with others. If you respect my request I will not mention you again on this thread.

Promise

Hank was his nickname at school and he loved Marvin Rainwater :-)

But reason for Bruce's name change is less well known.

Terry Harris was never going to catch on, was it? Jet was his nickname and he was going to change surname to Stream.
