Aww thanks Shelley Rose

More like fat sausages than balls, but I will definitely have a go later in the week :-D

Oh..............just seen something to cheer me up in the garden!

A blackbird went onto the bird table and grabbed a piece of my homemade date and walnut loaf which he seemed to be enjoying...........birds usually reject my offerings
:-D :-D

Lol, Lol & more Lol. KittytheLearnerCook

I make my own fat balls! (much better than shop bought ones, well the birds think so)!
I make them using Beef Dripping (it stays more solid than Lard, tho I have used lard occasionally).
I melt the dripping in a saucepan, let it cool a bit, then add whatever nuts/fruit you've got, I use porridge oats or museli blueberries/raspberries/dried cranberries cut up, chopped up peanuts and sunflower seeds, when it's cooled down enough I spoon the mixture into cardboard loo roll tubes, put these when cool into a freezer bag or plastic container and into the fridge, they keep better this way, before I put them out for the birds I take the cardboard tubes off, the fat balls I put into the peanut feeders, they fit these and I can usually get 2 in a feeder.
Hope this helps.

Fat balls can be awful when you have a stiff bit too

KittytheLearnerCook

KittytheLearnerCook Report 1 Jul 2013 21:18

We couldn't get the spoon into the middle, it was like stiff treacle...............*shudders*

The fat balls were like kind of ultra soft fudge with liquid centres...........pity they weren't chocolate they would be tasty :-D

KittytheLearnerCook

KittytheLearnerCook Report 1 Jul 2013 21:08

Mersey...............I try, I really really do *sighs*

They were slightly less floppy than the soufflés I foolishly tried to make.

My husband begged me not to try, but cheered me on from a distance, bless him.

They came out of the oven and looked good, but one hint of a teaspoon later they sagged and did their best to hide in the ramekins slowly turning to a gloopy gluey puddle. :-0
