Nolls from Harrogate Report 8 Jul 2013 21:12

It took me all my time to try kangaroo only a mouthful but it was delicious but wouldn't eat it again. Funny today was sitting outside a butchers shop and looked at their board selling goat all sorts leg, chops, steaks, beefburgers....but thought No thank you. Couldn't eat horse or dog or cat unless really desperate :-(

Blimey, Nolls - Harrogate's changed since I was last there! Goat burgers! Here's me thinking it was posh. :-D

I could at least try everything ........ and have!

Horse meat ................ had horse meat stews during and just after the war. It was not rationed, and most towns had a butcher specialising in horse meat. Have since had it ............... once was in Switzerland where we were taken to a very highly regarded restaurant out in the country that specialised in "cook your own kebabs and veggies". The most highly praised option was horsemeat, followed by venison, and then beef.

I love venison, but decided to try the horsemeat ......... it was delicious!!

Rabbit ............. also common just after the war, as not rationed. Will still opt for a rabbit casserole or braised rabbit if on the menu, if a game animla meat is not also on there.

Venison, bison, buffalo ................. love 'em all.

kangaroo meat ............... been to OZ, eaten it there, delicious.

Rattlesnake ............... had it bbq'd ........ pretty tasty, but far too many small bones for me.

I eat any kind of fish and shell fish, crabs, lobster, etc.

Used to often choose escargot with garlic butter as a starter when we ate out .............. but can no longer eat butter!

Whale meat apparently has a "fishy flavour".

I've had seal meat ................. wouldn't choose it again, bit chewy and "fishy", but would eat it in an emergency

I've eaten seaweed ................ often wrapped around sushi .............. also dulse, etc.

I love sushi, with the raw fish.

In other words ........... I will try anything, and have very eclectic tastes.

Long Pig ................. would have to be absolute emergency, but would if it was the only way to survive.

Well Geordie it's the posh butchers in town think it's supposed to be upmarket :-0

Graham

Graham Report 8 Jul 2013 22:20

I wouldn't say goat burgers were exactly common.

Quite a varied menu Sylvia. :-) I do like a bit of seaweed. I usual have some whenever I go to a chinese restuarant. ;-) I don't like the sound of sushi. I like fish, but preferable cooked. :-)

Sharron

Sharron Report 8 Jul 2013 22:26

Sushi is not necessarily raw fish. Try it and see (spoken by a veggie).

There is a good chance you are having deep fried kale when you order seaweed.

Really cheap to make at home .Fill your boots daily!

Isn't it funny, most of us happily eat shrimps/prawns, but if offered a woodlouse, would turn it down.
As far as I can see, they're of a similar species - but one lives in the sea.

I wouldn't eat veal having stayed on a farm when young and listening all night to the cows in distress at their calves being taken away (don't know if that is still in practice today) although Milk cows I believe suffer the same procedure and I take milk in coffee which makes me rather hypocritical.

I wont buy lamb or any game meats

Just personal choice really being a lapsed veggie the smell of bacon sarnies being my undoing.

Graham

Graham Report 9 Jul 2013 08:50

When you smell bacon cooking, what you're actually smelling is the salt that it's coated in being cooked. ;-)

Game meats covers a lot of different things. Is it the hunting you object to?

I am not a fussy eater and will give most things a try, however I simply can not eat a fish with its head still on.

Sharron

Sharron Report 9 Jul 2013 12:05

As a veggie I do my best. I would like to not consume dairy products but I am not strong enough.

GinN

GinN Report 9 Jul 2013 12:06

No, Paula, I won't, it's that accusing look they give you!

I love seafood, and the only native shellfish they had in Madeira was limpets, so I tried them, many times. They can be a bit chewy, but are lovely cooked in garlic.
I won't eat oysters, though, certainly not when they're alive!
