Graham

In this case, we are talking specifically about the GR Wall on FB .........

...... which, if you haven't looked at it, is full of messages from people looking for other people.

GR staff are supposed to monitor that page, and are SUPPOSED to give people advice on means by which they can find "lost" people ............. usually by directing them to join GR and post on Living Relatives.

The posts keep coming, and move down and down the page ..................... and I doubt that many people get satisfaction by posting on there.

As RR says, advice to people on here to "look on FB" would never mean go to the GR page on FB .................. it means do the search for people by using the Search facility.

Why would we do anyhting so silly as to send them to a page where there is little help????

That GB wall used to be very active, with people chatting, but also loads of people asking questions about finding ancestors.

That all changed when FB brought in its Timeline

I. like many others, refuse to help find Living Relatives, especially on FB, as you never know who is looking for who .........

......... is it legit?? is it an abusive partner?? A sexual predator??

etc etc.

Sorry Roy. I didn't mean you personally. But it must be confusing for the people who get these mixed messages.

No not exactly Graham, ,because the advice to look on Facebook is to use the search facility on Facebook (which a lot of people don't think of doing), not put a search on the GR FB page only .

For instance I found someone on here who had a mutual relative in their tree, but they didn't reply to the message, so I looked for their name on FB and contacted them that way.

I think I have been a member for about ten years now and I have only ever looked on this board.

Not very adventurous am I?

How many times have people come on this site looking for missing relatives and been advised to go and look on facebook? Now you're all saying that those people looking for missing relatives on facebook should come onto this site? :-S

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

yes, they probably would not have liked that!! :-D

Sylvia It was to the effect that I thought GR were ;missing a trick' as all those unanswered posts like 'how do I get started ' and 'how much' etc (not to mention the 'searching for' post which had been up for hours ) were potential paying customers ;-) the posts have now been replied to by GR :-)

EDIT I also mentioned that if they promoted LLF on the page they really should be around to respond to those who were on the site because of it ...not in those words but that's the gist .

what did you say, RR??????

DC ...............

I agree.

I also used to look on that page a lot. Now, rarely do.

My post was apparently removed...followed by a flurry of activity with GR posting replies ;-)

Zactly Rose!

That was another point which has kept me away. I just feel sorry for those poor people. I commented on the fact last year and GR said that they had put guidelines under 'Notes'.

Take a look. I ask you, how many newbies are going to look under 'Notes'??? Actually, how many 'oldies' are going to look either ???

So many potential customers - so little support.

I often wonder about people looking for 'lost' relatives on here and other places

How are we to know that the man or woman looking for a 'sister' or 'cousin' is not the spouse of that person and was abusing them before they disappeared.

To my mind a very dangerous thing to do in helping some of these people.

Rambling Report 11 Jul 2013 15:34

well I'm going to be Miss Popularity lol I have just posted on there, I really think it's lousy business sense to promote LLF and then just ignore the very people who post that they are searching and who are potential paying members.

I wonder what all those FB posters think

When they never receive acknowledgement from GR

Who they believe are "" doing lookups""

DC I used to have a look on their FB page from time to time but for the same reason as you I don't bother anymore I also never help on GR's Find Living Relatives board for a similar reason "people looking for 'lost' relatives" I think most are not in fact "lost" relatives but relatives that are hiding? or don't want to be found.

I used to look at the GR page most days DC. Can't be bothered now - for exactly the same reason. :-(

Graham

they probably get a bigger target audience on there; and it doesn't cost them anything ;-)

DazedConfused

I used to enjoy popping on this page.

But now all it is is people looking for 'lost' relatives.

Do not bother much now.... :-\
