Malala Yousafzai addresses UN

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban while travelling to school, is making a statement to the UN about the importance of education.

The speech coincides with her 16th birthday, which is being marked by the first all-youth takeover of the UN General Assembly in New York.

remarkable indeed - and here we have children who bunk off school - makes you wonder doesn't it

I totally agree. To stand in front of so many people, so many important people, surely makes many of us feel somewhat humble. That girl will receive the Nobel Peace Prize and will deserve it totally.
I was absolutely blown away when I was watching her speak.

It is sad (not my first choice of wording) that any culture treats half the population as second class citizens and can murder them for trying to learn to read and write.

And the Taliban should see that as a clue as to how they got it wrong by her survival alone.

She has madea remarkable recovery and I think she will go on to inspire others in many ways and maybe become an important political figure as she gains maturity and experience.

Let's hope she will be left alone to make her mark in the world and do great things and most of all, to find happiness and contentment.

She puts a lot of our young women to shame with her dignity and spirit.

Thank you all for your comments - I listened to her whole speech and like ErrolSheep I to was blown away by what she had to say. I was very impressed how dignified and composed she was and how passionate she was about the right of every child to have a proper education.

Despite what she has endured she was not concerned with herself she was concerned for others. This is a remarkable young girl who has a great future ahead of her and she is an inspiration to all children who are deprived of basic rights.
