AS SUGESTED A THREAD ABOUT THE EXPANSION OF HEATHROW,
WHICH SOME OF YOU MAY KNOW I LIVE VERY CLOSE TO THE SOUTH SIDE,
MAY SAY WHY DID YOU MOVE THERE WHEN YOU KNEW THERE WAS AN AIRPORT ALREADY THERE,WELL I LIVED HERE SINCE A FEW WEEKS OLD MUM WENT HOME TO HER MUMS A FEW MILES AWAY TO HAVE ME SO I THINK I QUAILFY AS LOCAL,
I REMEMBER PLAYING DOWN THE TWINNIES (TWO RIVERS SIDE BY SIDE ONE MAN MADE) AS YOUNGSTER PLANES TAKING OFF IN LARGE GAPPS NOW ABOUT EVERY MINIUT IF YOU STAND IN THE RIGHT PLACE IN LINE WITH LANDING YOU CAN SEE THEM BEHIND EACH OTHER COMING INTO LAND,
HEATHROW EMPLOYS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITHOUT EXPANSION WOULD YOU LIKE A MASSIVE NEW AIRPORT IN YOUR BACK YARD.

American visitors can never understand why Windsor Castle was built so close to Heathrow.

Abu Qatada used nearby Northolt Airport for his very delayed flight to Jordan.

Thanks Dizzi,

I heard it on the tv first thing this morning and straight away thought about you and where you live.

I just hope they build the runway on the North side.

There are 3 sites they are looking at,,2 on the north side and one on the south side.

Hope it won't interfere with you .

Do not fear - a news report said they only put up that option as the owners of LHR wanted to be considered.

Now on the other hand...Boris Island in the Thames Estuary or the other one(s) on the Hoo Peninsular are the other ones suggested. Medway Council isn't at all keen on any ones suggested & the people who live on the Isle of Grain have had their house prices blighted for over 10 years even before the current crisis.

Part of the Hoo Peninslar is a Bird Sanctuary for wading birds. That aside, it is a flood plain....so where is the displaced estuary water going to go?

Well, considering the amount of pollution caused by planes, the fact that we now have a 'green' tax, and lightbulbs we can hardly see by, in an attempt to reduce pollution, and that the whole global warming hype has more or less been debunked - they should restrain the use of planes!!!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 18 Jul 2013 09:59

Thought that was what they are doing Maggie with the constant increase in fares and decrease in number of flights. But no matter how much the prices rise, even in the recession, people still manage to afford to fly. And, of course they have made even larger planes.

Dizzi, having flown quite a bit from heathrow and stayed in hotels in the area, I don't envy you. It is actually horrifying when you realise the number of aircraft 'up there' at any given time.

We live very near Gloucester airport but that mainly deals with small aircraft and helicopters. does occasionally sound like a lot of annoying insects overhead at times but nothing at all compared to the larger airports. Yet there was a huge protest when they wanted to extend a runway here.

I supposae all the time people want to travel there will have to be airports. :-S

Maggie, my thoughts exactly. :-) To add to your list what about plastic bags in supermarkets. Small fry compared to polution from a plane. :-S

Think they should forget that idea, as it is rather two faced imo.
Dizzi, i hope they dont built it at all, you have enough already.

Personally I can,t understand Why they don,t use" Manston" its an old RAF base with one of the longest runways in the country. Good links to London and The Continent.**M**.

Kense Report 18 Jul 2013 18:56

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about how difficult it was to get to Manston.

It's a good place for flight crew training though.

Hillingdon is already the most polluted borough in the country. Why add to the already poor air quality.
Who in they're right mind allows plains to circle round and round a heavily populated area.
Dizzi is correct in saying that it is disconcerting to see how quickly the planes take off and land. No margin for error and the M25 is directly under the flight path.
Having said all that the 3rd runway has been on the cards since 1940s.
Rant over. Guess where I live ;-) ;-) ;-)
Take care

Why do we need more aircraft flights with the pollution it generates?

Oh of course! So people can jet off for a three day break in Thailand, idiots can fly off somewhere exotic for a stag or hen do, businessmen can have a jolly instead of using the phone or video conferencing, Brits can go and behave like total ***** abroad and we can buy fruit grown thousands of miles away. Most of all so, the fat cats that run the business can get fatter.

Silly me

Kense

Kense Report 18 Jul 2013 22:12

Come to that, do we really need cars? Is it so boy racers can terrorise the neighbourhood, and mums can drive the few hundred yards to school etc.

After all cars are responsible for 10% of carbon emissions, and commercial aircraft only 1.6%. Even computers produce more carbon pollution.

Back to Heathrow, this is nostalgic:

At one time I believe it had seven runways and still had five in the sixties.
