Could it be that it gets hot because of the sites that you visit Jude ?...... ;-)

Using a vacuum can cause a lot of damage.

Is the fan on all the time?

I do think like Rollo that it is just a case of using a bit of compressed air to get rid of the fluff that builds up

Why won't a vacuum work, some adds suggest you use them??

l can hear the fan on the left side and it gets hottish there too, but there is no cover to unscrew there, the one l did unscrew had comupter parts, like green computer boards. Even though l have LT on a book its still getting abit hot again, will chat to neighbour in the morning.

Thank you RollotheRed. Did have the compressed air for the keyboard. Would not like to be without my laptop. Will check the link.

EDIT not sure I would want to embark on that but I will take advice to prevent damaging computer and take it to a little shop in the high street for attention.

The laptop should not get so hot as to burn thighs etc!!!
If it is continuously operated while overheating it will eventually cut out from time to time and then die. It is 99% likely that either the fan and case are full of fluff OR that the fan has stopped operating or both.

To avoid this as I said you must remove the fan and give it a good clean with compressed air ( £1 a can from Maplins ).

No special tools needed.

I have the same model Jude. I put it on one of those trays that have the bean bag effect at the back. It allows for the laptop to have a bit of air space if you rest it on the rim. The fan comes on only occasionally, When I'm too lazy to get up for the tray I end up with fire burns on my thighs. Think perhaps the frame sounds a bit of a safer option. Will look out for one.

Just had a look on Amazon and there are lots of different ones on there if thats what you are thinking of getting. Various prices depending on the sort you want. not one like mine though :-( ;-)

No Jude the one I have isn't a cooler it is just a stand ,X shaped. Imagine 2 thin poles about 15" long shaped like an X with tiny legs in each corner ,back 2 a tiny bit higher than front 2. you just put laptop on top of it and it raises it about 1/2 inch at front and 1inch at back so laptop is on a slope.

The cheap laptop rest I've got doesn't block the vents as it is only a frame shaped like an X . Not very good at explaining it , sorry.

Do you ever hear the fan kick in?

l took the back cover thingy off but it did'nt work, no fan or similar there, but it does seem abit better since raising it with books. Neighbour is aware of it now so he'll check it out if it happens again.
