I was enjoying a rib eye steak tonight and bit on something hard, was going to complain about something in my steak, removed the hard lump - saw a glint of gold - and thought I have a gold nugget here!!

WRONG!! It was my gold backed crown - been there for about 45 years. Why could it not have lasted a few more????

It is my upper front tooth!! All I need is black pointed hat and I shall be the Witch of Wessex (some may think I already am!).

Woe, oh woe. :-0

Mersey Report 30 Jul 2013 20:00

Lyndi Report 30 Jul 2013 22:10

45 years is good going!! Glad you enjoyed the steak ;-)

And no earrings here either - but what I have had since then is a junk email folder full of jewellery offers every day, so was a really bad move :-D

SylviaInCanada Report 31 Jul 2013 05:20

Chris ............

about 10 years ago, I was chewing a Mentos mint when I crunched on something hard.

It was a gold crown from one of my molars, the one right at the back.

It had been there for about 40 years!

Unfortunately, we were up at our cabin, 60 km from the nearest town when it happened.

OH drove me into town, I stopped by one of the 2 dental offices and a dentist looked at my tooth and then at the crown. Then she said "I can stick this back on until you get home to see your own dentist."

She proceeded to do just that ................. and I ate very gingerly for the next 8 or 9 days, until we got back home, and I could make an appointment.

Problem then was that I was between dentists. I'd decided I no longer wanted to travel to the one I'd had for years, but hadn't settled on where I did want to go.

Had to make up my mind in a hurry!!

I'm still going to that practice, which is within walking distance of home. So it was a good choice.

I did have another gold crown, put in at the same time 40+ years ago, but on the other side of my mouth .............. the dentist left that one there for another few years, then said "We really should replace that one, I'm worried about what might be underneath it!"

The 2 crowns were put in by my dental student roommate at Liverpool Uni ............... she needed to do 4 gold crowns to get her degree. In those days, the students had to make the crowns, starting with a piece of gold and shaping it, fitting it, etc.

My dentist here had never heard of doing that!!

ChrisofWessex Report 31 Jul 2013 14:18

Wouldn't have been so bad if mine had been out of sight but my front top tooth!! The root is still in there - so I expect that will have to go and a false tooth in place.

Trying to find out if I go to my dentist or dental Hospital - as am on oxygen 24/7.

Last week it was the missing keys which turned up an hour after locksmith fixed everything and cost £75!!

SylviaInCanada Report 31 Jul 2013 20:10

True, Chris ..............

your tooth is much more obvious than mine!

Mine was just awkward when eating ................ as well as the sharp bits catching my tongue and cheek.

Hope you can sort it out quickly.

ChrisofWessex Report 31 Jul 2013 20:40

Dentist it is next week - had a gap in 30 minutes today and although in village no way can I be hurried up nowadays.

OH does not know it yet but he is in there with me to make sure my oxygen is OK!

Ouch, not what you needed Chris. Hope the problem can be sorted without too much hassle next week.

Sylvia, did you need crowns at the time or were you just after a nest egg lol?

ChrisofWessex Report 8 Aug 2013 12:18

I am happy, oh so happy!!!!!! Since yesterday afternoon I can smile again!! No longer can OH refer to me as 'the wicked witch'.

He had an interesting 3/4 of an hour sat opposite me in charge of the oxygen whilst I had a root canal, then rubber post, then a proper post plus 3 steel rods - lots of drilling, cementing and waiting and then the clever girl put my own crown back on. No injections and never felt a thing. She did warn me that as I had done such a good job on it - this was the 'last chance saloon'.

:-D :-D

ChrisofWessex Report 14 Aug 2013 22:31

Well I was waken this morning my OH with croissant and a cup of tea and I had just begun to eat - WHEN - I felt a hard lump in my mouth - my crown.

In dentists this afternoon - she used a bigger peg this time for the crown and it is 'last chance'. Doesn't work - it is a bridge with false tooth and a massive bill.

Chris, maybe you should stop eating lol Hope this latest work lasts a bit longer so you don't have to go down the other route and get a big bill

Take care,

ChrisofWessex Report 15 Aug 2013 17:59

I saw an add in local freebie - implants FROM £999!!!!!!

Said I am not having one - I would not get my wear out of it. OH said I agree. ;-)

Barbara Report 15 Aug 2013 18:55

I have been having trouble with my gold crowns of late. Had had an original one in since the children were little (therefore 20/30 years ago) and then last year it came out - did not worry re this but, after having it replaced last year, it has come out a few times - I am wondering whether what was used to fix it many moons ago has perhaps been changed as it is certainly not staying in the same - Last time I went, I suggested that he nailed it in!!!!

ChrisofWessex Report 15 Aug 2013 22:18

I feel for you Barbara - yesterday no solid food - today mushy solids!!!!
