Although it is impossible to sort out connexion problems without knowing the following:

operating system ; eg WinXP SP3 , Win7, Apple, Linux Mint and so on
browser ; eg Win8 Win9 Firefox23, PaleMoon, Safari, Opera, Chrome
connection type ; eg ADSL fast, ADSL budget, fobre, USB key, tether ...
; wire thernet / wifi
nominal speed ; eg 2 Mb 10 Mb 20 Mb 50 Mb 100 Mb

such info is rarely given.

GRu are using a Microsoft IIS7 server blade. This is quite unusual for a public web site ( most use Apache ).

One reason for that is the difficulty of tuning IIS7/SQL database for slow client connections. Thanks to various security holes in IIS/SQL allowing too long for a connexion could end up with a hacked server.

At a guess most of the people having a lot of hassle with their connection have at least one of these features:

(a) running IE8 or earlier (b) nominal connexion speed below 10 Mb eg USB key (c) are located a long way from the UK eg Australia, Canada. There are NO GRu servers or mirrors outside of the UK.

If using wifi and the connexion will not play online HD video or iPlayer smoothly then again problems with GRu are likely.

The load on the GRu server is nowhere near enough to create any problems.

Speed of the site - update
21 Aug 2013 11:47

We're really sorry to hear that some of you are having problems using the site. We know that it has been really slow for some of you recently. Our technical team have been working on this for the last couple of days and are doing their best to get it fixed. They know what part of the problem is and they're just trying to find out exactly where it is happening. We realise how frustrating it is for you when you're trying to carry out your research. And again we are really sorry.

The Genes Team.
...........

Don't know about 'Some' probably 'All'! - its only the minority who use the boards on a regular basis who have publicly complained about it.

Don't use Internet Explorer 6,7,8.

These versions of the browser have all kinds of compliance problems.
One result is that web sites give degraded performance or in some cases won't run at all.

Even worse IE8 has some pretty awful security holes which all the patches in the world cannot fix. Microsoft encourage people to upgrade and they are right.

Some things are forever but not web browsers or computer operating systems.

jax Report 21 Aug 2013 14:34

so what has that got to do with GR being so slow....nothing

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 21 Aug 2013 14:41

Rollo is quite right in what he says in some ways but the issue here is the sudden reduction in service rather than the ongoing issues many members have suffered.

Connecting to this site took ages...about 5 minutes.I can't ever remember it taking that long before.I'm in Australia,by the way.

Joy Report 21 Aug 2013 15:05

Members of GR have been assured in writing by GR staff that the browser used is irrelevant.

However, my computer is vista and the browser is chrome, both up to date.

The slowness of GR right now is appalling and is unacceptable.

The current burp seems to be that they have added in googletagmanager for the advertising. If you have a slowish connection it won't be much of a help.
If you don't want google tagged ads then:
Find the hosts file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

( it is a text file with no extension, notepad will do fine )

and add these lines:
127.0.0.1 d.unamis.com
127.0.0.1 www.googletagmanager.com

save the file
Restart yr web browser
( if you have Vista or Win8 you will need to run notepad as administrator)

but bookmark a forum eg general chat rather than the home page as otherwise startup will be slow while it waits for googletags and eventually gives up.

Errol can give you more how-to it's not my forte.

"bookmark a forum eg general chat"

- that is how it is bookmarked on my computer.

RolloTheRed Report 21 Aug 2013 15:21

Just bookmarking general chat or whatever won't save you from google tags you'll have to edit the host file.

I'm in the queue as well Errol.

I was going to do some work on here today, don't think I'll bother. Yet another day when I go over to your competition GR. At this rate I won't bother adding anything more onto my tree on GR.

If it doesn't improve I may not continue my membership as at the moment it's a waste of time trying to do anything. :-(
