Nolls from Harrogate Report 7 Sep 2013 17:04

Leith Lassie Thank you.... I knew myself that the Scotsman would be dearer (a bit!) and as an Edinburgh Lassie myself should know the Evening Post would be the one to put it in but ... as I wanted other parts of Scot. to know went to the S/man however a phone call has done the trick as one friend has passed on the sad news to another friend etc ... Guess what won't be using the Scotsman ever again Massive Rip Off

Grabagran Report 7 Sep 2013 16:13

I can tell you it would be so expensive as it was the Scotsman! The Evening News is cheaper and always has been. It's a total rip-off tbh, as they're both printed and owned by the same company. Disgraceful! The Scotsman is the rich mans publication and the EN is the poor mans. As simple as that, and as an Edinburgh lass I'm ashamed to admit it. Sorry for your loss x

That is kind of you Elizabeth thank you.
Perhaps I could mention here a word of warning...My lovely brother died due to a fall in his house , his wife was over in Scot. for the funeral of her only brother so he was on his own. he had a buzzer?? and friends were going to keep an eye on him when he didn't show up at the pub where he ate most days they got worried and asked the office where he lived to go and check .... the answer was "Sorry No we can't do that - Company Policy" a lot more I could add however friends on the 4th day got the police and they found him in a coma he had been lying on the floor for 4 days....So please everyone leave a key with neighbours a buzzer that goes out to an alarm centre is no good if you fall and knock yourself unconscious, we know, we have learned the hard way.
By the way not putting this on for sympathy please ... just as a warning

Dear Nolls

Hello

I am sorry to hear of the passing of your brother.

Outrageous that a newspaper is making money like this.

Sincere wishes to you and your family
Elizabeth, EOS

Andysmum the notice was also put in the Washington paper and it had the same sort of thing with a guest book which you can actually get printed off as a book alas I haven't a clue about what the Scottish papers do so we have given up and phoned friends and relations instead. Just thinking this could be quite upsetting for the grieved relations who live there we have over the years had many notices in both papers as we all come from Edin. but never at such extortionate prices :-(

OH's aunt died earlier this year and her local paper has an online announcement section where you can put the details of the death/funeral arrangements etc.

At the bottom are a couple of tick boxes for "light a candle" and "say a prayer", and a space for a personal message, if you wish. The bereaved can then read the thread and also know how many people have lit candles/said prayers.

I don't know what it costs, but I know it stays there for months, unless you delete it yourself.

Kandj that is a really nice idea especially for village life wish we had thought of that a few years ago when OH's sister passed away in her village . As you say how much do the elaborate ones cost? I must admit thought there were far fewer notices in the paper when I last looked.

Hi kandj....

In my area of Aberdeenshire the florists have always put a black edged card in their windows re local deceased persons, certainly in the 38 yrs I have been here.
I have always thought it was a nice gesture, albeit they are hopeful in gaining some trade from it!

A ridiculous price Nolls, makes me wonder how much the more elaborate ones are charged.

An idea I spotted recently in a nearby village was where the local florist had the name of person who had died and the place and time of the funeral service. This black edged card was placed in their front window and the same card and details were also in the village Post Office window

I have never come across this before, but I thought it was a good way of keeping the village community updated when a person had passed away. Obviously the florist may well gain from floral tributes but the idea was still interesting I thought and no doubt useful information for the village folk.

Barbara I bet if they are not getting any money for it .. it will have been abolished!

Barbara Report 3 Sep 2013 22:54

I used to work for a local weekly newspaper but it was a while ago and, admittedly, things may well have now changed. At the time, you paid for what we referred to as the "death" notice and for the acknowledgement but the obituary (i.e. report of the funeral, mourners, etc) was not paid for as it appeared in the "news" part of the newspaper and was therefore classed as editorial, as opposed to the death and acknowledgement which were classed as classified ads under the heading of "Family Notices".

Having said this though, I have not noticed this type of obituary in the above paper for a while now so it is perhaps not done in this way any more.

Andysmum Thank you .. I tried to phone and get the notice put in the other day but like you was told not from general public but DIL went into site on laptop and got through they then sent her info back asked her to send our notice and then sent the charge we thought it was because there was an email address which could verify it was a correct notice (I don't really know) . I wonder if we had just put in into the Edin Evening News (it would have been about the same size as your text) it would have been about what your's cost ...well will never know as we are not going to go ahead with it.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother, Nolls.

I have just found out that our local paper, also in Scotland, would charge £31.68 for a simple intimation. To find out, I had to create a message, complete with fictional name, on their website and they then told me the cost. It was 17 words/86 letters long.

They won't accept deaths at all from the general public - they have to be done by the undertaker. I think this is to ensure that they are genuine.

Well to be honest Woody I'm glad to hear you were quoted about the same price, as I was beginning to think they had made a mistake.

Woody's Report 3 Sep 2013 20:16

Just ridiculous, Nolls.
My sister in law had to put an intimation in the same paper that Joan is talking about. No hearts and flowers, just a simple intimation showing time and place of funeral - £201 inc. Vat.

My sincere condolences on your loss but well done for standing up to blatant profiteering.

Glad you used those emoticons, George! We're not all like that!! :-S

Thank you Sue / Maryanna . I am not going to bother now have phoned a number of friends so the news will do the rounds I should think just thought it would be nice for a wee bit in the paper but my brother would have a fit if he was here so won't bother

Margee that sounds reasonable just don't know what the papers here are thinking off.

Anyway am going to plant a tree (hopefully) somewhere near Edinburgh .

Maryanna

Maryanna Report 3 Sep 2013 19:35

That is disgraceful,

I am sure the last time I put one in the local paper it was 90p a line.

I often wonder how much those boxes with hearts and doves and flowers cost.

I think that is just taking advantage.

I am so sorry about your brother. M

supercrutch Report 3 Sep 2013 19:24

Nolls that is just awful. Have you considered calling the news desk to ask whether they would put a small article in the paper? It wouldn't cost you anything and papers are always looking for copy.

Sorry you lost your brother.

I've been looking to see how much it would be in any of my local papers .......

but they don't seem to show a price, until you submit the obituary.

I seem to remember that at least one of them publishes obituaries for free, or at least, they did a couple of years ago.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 3 Sep 2013 19:07

This got me wondering how much it would cost here in Canada. I checked our local paper. It's a flat $29.95 which converts to abt. 18 pounds sterling.
