It was my first day at grammar school.

Green and brown, stupid hat, pleated skirt, green drawers. Those were the days.

My first day at grammar school was in 1958. How different things used to be!

Bottle green uniform with sailor style stupid hat too! Gymslip, the hem of which had to be 2 inches below the knee and it would be measured, a purse on a cord across your chest, lace up brown shoes outdoors and 'regulation' sandals indoors. Cream, not white blouses with a compulsory red and green striped tie. Green or red gingham check dresses in the summer. The hat had to be worn at all times with winter uniform, even with a blazer. Also the dreaded bottle green knickers!! No makeup, long hair plaited or tied back, no jewellery.

I remember we could change from gymslip to a skirt in the second year because it was considered we had hips by then! Most of us stuck with our gymslips though as we liked the 'St Trinian' look.

No eating food in the street when you were outside the school grounds either. I got very good at sucking fruit gums or spangles without moving my lips!!

Everything stocked exclusively at the dearest shop in town.

AnnCardiff Report 9 Sep 2013 22:51

knickers were fleecy lined with a pocket!!!!

Sharron

Sharron Report 9 Sep 2013 22:58

No pockets in mine. That seems to be something that changed in the few years between us.

I missed out on gymslips too. The only reason I had a beret was because I happened to get hold of one.

46 years for me. Grey woollen gymslip for first 2 years, bottle green blazer and matching thick knockers - sorry typo - knickers (we had to wear 2 pairs for gym). The boys didn't wear 2 pairs of pants for gym - they were allowed to wear shorts!!
We never had the luxury of a pocket in the knickers!!
Woollen culottes for hockey

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 9 Sep 2013 23:28

thick knockers - like it :-D :-D

culottes for hockey - posh or what!!! we had to play in our gymslips

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 9 Sep 2013 23:52

.......AND we had to wear proper hockey boots.
Most of my uniform came from the school second-hand shop.
Just as well, as I gave up all sports in the second year. :-D

62 years for me!

navy blue gymslip, white square-necked short sleeved blouse, bottle green v-neck sweater with the stripe for your House in the V ribbing, green, red and white striped blazer, navy raincoat, black lace up shoes for outside, black slip-ons for indoors, navy bloomers (no pocket), shorts for outdoor sports otherwise in bloomers, white ankle socks in summer with navy knee socks as an alternative in winter

The boys had dark grey of nay trousers or woollen shorts, white shirts, green, white and red striped tie

That was the uniform for the first 4 years.

In form 5 (GSE year), girls wore a navy blue V-necked pinafore. The rest of the uniform stayed the same.

Length had to be 1-3" above the floor, measured when kneeling down

If you stayed on into the 6th form, it was a navy blue 8-gore skirt, white short-sleeved shirt blouse, green, red and white striped tie. Otherwise identical.

They did change the colour of the blazer to plain bottle green when I was in the first year 6th form ................... some one finally realised how stupid 17/18 year boys and girls looked in the striped ones.

Unfortunately, Mum had just bought me a new blazer the previous year, and we couldn't afford another new one.

Proper hockey boots, white plimsolls or tennis shoes for tennis or netball, bare feet in the gym.

Boys had to have proper soccer and cricket boots.

I forgot

we had a green Kangol beret which we had to wear all the time when travelling to and from school.

.......... it became a matter of pride if you kept the little "tail" longer than a month :-D

The boys had a green cap with a visor

Chris in Sussex Report 10 Sep 2013 07:50

46 years ago :-0 Where has the time gone?

Navy blue gymslip. blue and white stripe shirt, white socks, blue gaberdine raincoat, school scarf and a natty navy hat with school badge and ribbon 'tail'....Navy knickers!

Navy blue skirt for 'dance' and summer PE, navy tracksuit for winter.

Navy science overall and one for cookery.

Indoor and outdoor shoes.

Summer dress blue and white check, navy cardigan and navy blazer, straw boater!

Leather satchel and cotton gym bag.

This was a state grammar school but buying the uniform from the John Lewis group nearly bankrupted my parents :-( No second hand school uniform shops back then.

*sigh*

Bottle Green everything except a blouse, even the stupid hat.

All had to be bought at stupid expense from just one supplier and the school got a cut (as they do today).

Skirts no more than 4 inches above the knee. No boots, even in the coldest weather.

Gym kit, games kit, hockey boots, pumps, hockey stick, lacrosse stick, tennis racquet, badminton racquet .....

Lab coat, pinny for cooking.

Hated it from day 1.

I started Secondary School in 1970, and even then, our gym kit had to be the regulation, navy blue gym knickers.
Girls and boys were in separate classes until 3rd year!
We had no sports field in the school, and we girls were marched across the road to use the local sports ground... in our gym knickers and white t shirts

This was no grammar school, just the local comprehensive!

I deliberately flunked the eleven plus exam in 1959! I didn't like the look of the horrid old fashioned grammar school, and wanted to go to the lovely new secondary modern school just up the road! No regrets, though I did have to get my O and A levels the hard way!
