if you yourself want to be helpful to future members, you can do the following ..................

1. make sure that you notify GR every time you change your email address.

Most people do not seem to think of doing this

2. Make sure that a member of your family, or a close friend, has ALL the details of your membership in GR, including your PASSWORD.

Give them permission to access your account and delete your tree(s), and remove you form GR in the event that you become so ill that you can no longer continue as a member or die.

Most people do not do this.

This also applies to ALL other sites that you have joined over the years, whether they be genealogical, shopping, etc etc

I have a little black address book by my computer. In it, I have listed alphabetically every site that I have ever joined, free or subscription, along with the email address I used, my password, and any "secret code" involved. OH and my daughter both know about it, and know what to do if I become incapable or die.

It is always possible for a family member to take over your tree, and membership, if they so desire ..................... but YOU have to tell them what to do and how to do it.

Once in a while I have had a reply to my message and have not recognised the names mentioned.
The last time this happened, it was a reply to a message sent almost 5 years previously.
Some people start out with great enthusiasm, then leave the site for a long time before sending a reply.

A game of patience, I'm afraid...............

Hi DazedConfused

thanks for reply

it seems a shame that we cannot contact people and it is also it is upsetting that a person has died and he is still registered with Genes and as you said upsetting for relatives still living. I have a neice that has passed but she is still currently registered with Genes her partner says it may be good for their children to look one day and see where they come from.

bye for now :-)

Not matter what the circumstances, unless a person deletes their tree, it will appear on here.

So although there are many trees on here, there is no way of knowing if the holder is still around.

I contacted a gentleman a few years ago, and my reply was from his wife, he had died and she was still getting emails/messages about his tree and she was very upset. I advised her to contact Genes to have the tree removed. I believe she did so.

But in many cases trees remain on here forever, never being tended, pruned or given feed.

Genes will never disclose just how many inactive trees there are, so many of us will continue to try to make contact not knowing if that tree holder is still around!!!

If an email address is no longer valid, a message arrives stating "not able to be delivered". Do GR get this message if a member changes their email address without notifying them - if so, could they advise the member who sent the message please ????

I have a cousin and a uncle who died about 5/8 years ago respectively who asked their trees to be kept open for others to use..If you locate another family member on Genes they will respond to your query...It works well in our family anyhow...Regards...LES.

It is possible seagate - they could just be away from home at the moment, or be ill/caring for someone who is.

Other than losing interest, they could have died or changed their email address and not updated their account.

Check your sent message box and see if it has been read - unopened messages have an envelope icon next to them.

I dont think its that members haven't deleted their account It more that they left but didn't delete their tree so matches still can happen :-(

I've had this problem. I think that there are people who are still registered on here who haven't logged onto the site in some time. Since they haven't deleted their accounts, the system thinks they are still members.
