With such a (reportedly) long list of people wanting affordable homes, its a shame that a new one might not be built on the site if protestors get their way. Although the Philpotts caused the death of their children, that wasn't intended outcome.

there was a terrible fire 20yrs ago in a local housing estate not far from where i live,4 young children were burnt to death along with a young uncle,parents and older brother escaped, the council demolished the house, nothing was put in its place,when you walk through the estate now over 20 yrs later the big gap is still there. the childrens parents still live on the estate and it really must be horrible for them to have to walk or drive past. :-(

Wouldn't the Phillpott's house be structurally unsound anyway?

Being local to where the Phillpotts lived I don't think it matters what they do with the site once the properties have been demolished. Whatever they do it will always be remembered as 'that's where the Phillpotts house used to be".

The house where the Moors murders in lived in Hattersley was domlished as well not long after they were convicted even back in the 60's they decided no one would ever want to live at that address..... I think that was made in to a walk through however if you search hard enough on the net there will be a photo of where the house did stand.

Some wanted the house pulled down and a forever garden /play area built but as it would be a constant reminder and then possibly attract unwanted attention from people who just have to see,,,,,,,,,,then the very possibilty the Phillpots on release going there and making a mockery of it as it would happen from Mick Phillpot,,,,,,,,I'm sure the locals wouldnt want any glory picking from them.,,,,,,,,!!

Its best the the whole plot be given to new houses,,,,,,re-designed to another lay out,,,,,,then the local can move on and not have a constant reminder and also not see an overgrown bit of land which appears no one cares about...

I'm the opposite, Rollo. I watched first episode of Eastenders and have not been able to watch it since because Reg Cox was murdered. No doubt the set is full of other grisly reminders by now, and still people watch :-0

Seriously though, I thought a children's play area was best idea. What happened to Fred West's house, I wonder. I doubt murders on any site will usually affect present occupants. A family house is a family house, even if built on a Civil War site.

Disagree Rollo, I do not believe that house should remain standing. As with Rillington Place it will become a place of pilgrimage by the ghouls who visit to, as they put it, 'relive the terror'.

Back in the previous century I owned a house in north London. A previous owner had been murdered in the house in a somewhat gruesome manner. I did not lose any sleep using the room in which the guy had died, nor did I have any problems renting the house out.

I would have been very aggrieved to have been ordered to demolish the house simply because of its history. Neither do I believe that demolitions as in the case of Philpott are an appropriate use of public funds.

Rillington Place was demolished Ann, the whole street. Whether number 10 as a reaction to Christie or just redevelopement I don't know.

Fred and Rose West's house in Gloucester was demolished and nothing ever built on that plot

I wonder if 10 Rillington Place still exists under another name? probably not

I am sure I read somewhere that the house will be demolished and a childrens playing park bulit in its place BUT I may of dreamt that.

BUT there was also an announcement that more housing would be built on the site.

I really wouldn't like to occupy a property located there as I think the crime was just too terrible to be 'built over'.
