100% Agree with LadyScozz & Allan.
Why do organisations insist we have to be on Facebook & Twitter AND have a smart phone? I don't need the latter as I rarely have my phone on anyway and I have a computer, can occasionally borrow OH's laptop and I have a landline with answerphone.

Thankyou to 'Unknown'. My inhouse computer expert doesn't like Chrome and doesn't want to go back to IE10 so he tried your 'compatibility fix' this morning and it works - but it does look as though I've got to do the fix each time as it doesn't seem to save.

How many people use any of these boards ? A few hundred at the most and well under a huindred most days. In case anybody has forgotten this is a commercial web site. Sure the boards are a fun little cornert of the net functionally but have little zero commercial justification in 2014. D C Thomson Family Research lost £ 2 M last year. I can't see much resource going into any further makeover of the boards still less supporting the idiosyncracies of Microsoft, Internet Explorer and Silverlight. Commercially Facebook is the way to go and has been for a while now. Whether GenesRU approach to using Facebook is a good one is another matter.

HTML5 is the standard for web development. Developers target this and to a very large degree make less and and less effort to accomodate browsers which do not adhere to the standard. Of the major browsers IE 9 10 and 11 are way behind the other popular free products. Thus use of IE11 is certain to cause problems.

Some organisations eg the BBC can afford limitless funds to accomodate all number of quirks, ancient browsers and poorly compliant products such as IE. GenesRU is not one of them.

I then had a couple more hitches being unable to type in passwords for emails to contact within sites - solved one by using Firefly, another by sending an email with hyperlink to OH's computer and dealing with it from there. I in the end contacted our computer adviser who said he now had a few complaints about IE11 and the only useful advice he could give was to uninstall it. He also advised that then to run Windows Update and in optional updates to rightclick on IE11, leftclick on Hide to prevent it being installed again.

Martynsue - do note my report above about going to Windows Updates and clicking on Hide for IE11 or it may be automatically installed again!

I've also had this and did a system restore yesterday. Great. Turn laptop on today, automatic update again and guess what? Same problem. Aaagh!!!

CassieB - have you tried the compatibility fix as posted earlier? A number of people have reported that it solves their problem while GR are trying to sort it out from their end

Click the Tools icon (or Alt + X) - the cog shaped one top right of your screen

Click Compatibility View settings in the drop down list

Add the Genes Reunited website - genesreunited.co.uk

Yes thanks (Jax suggested this also) and it works but have to do it each time on this laptop but not husband's or the old desktop (which is in a fairly cold room!)

I have to say that while the compatibility fix did work for me with GR I had a whole lot of other problems elsewhere after the IE11 installlation - worst was being unable to type anything especially passwords - and it was IE11, I had to switch everything to Firefly where there were no problems. I uninstalled IE11 and things seem fairly all right now.
