What do think was the best plane used during WW2 ?

What do you consider to be be the best plane used during World War 2 ? I suppose the spitfire will be up in the top spot! Perhaps there are some other planes you think should also be in the top three, even as number 1. What about the German, and Japanese also America planes etc... perhaps you liked some of them too. Do you have a plane you have build yourself, or just a model of a spitfire perhaps ? I still need to get one, what a fantastic plane!

The Douglas C-47 (aka Dakota, Skytrain, DC-3, R4D, Li-2)

Not only an importamt aircraft during the war but because so many were built it was the mainstay of most European airlines for over a decade after the war. It was still used by the USAF and USN and many other air forces throughout the sixties.

Thanks for the interesting replies. It seems if you ask most people about planes during WW2, they can only come up with about three or four. I have to admit I can't think of many myself, but there must have been loads. I hope to build a spitfire, and/or get a diecast one. :-D

At one point during WW2 we were very low in spitfires, the Germans had loads of planes. However, the spitfires were such good planes, they took out a lot of theirs. Once you get control of the airspace in a country, then it's war game over! The spitfires plus a few other planes, stopped this from happening, saved us!

Difficult trying to whittle it down to five.
My 'short' list:
Hurricane, Spitfire, Wellington, Lancaster, Typhoon, Halifax, Tiger Moth, Lysander, Swordfish, Sunderland, Anson, Oxford, Catalina, Beaufighter, P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-29 Superfortress, C-47, Texan/Harvard, Avenger, Expediter, Piper Cub, Ju87, Ju88, Do17, Bf109, He.111, Me163, FW190, Fi103, Storch.

That's without any Russian, Italian, French or Japanese types which should be included.

I should've included the Ju 52, which was the main German transport aircraft of that time.

Re the number of aircraft used in the war, it must have been several hundred thousand.

I would have said the Spitfire and the Hurricane but I wonder if that is what we see in fly pasts at ceremonial occasions and the Lancaster of course. They do have a definite 'sound' when they fly over. I also like the Tiget Moth. :-)

It depends on the role to a certain extent.
For example:

The Ju 87B Stuka dive bomber blazed a path across Europe as aerial artillery.
The Lancaster was probably the best heavy bomber.
The Spitfire was an excellent fighter capable of multiple upgrades.
The Hurricane was a stable gun platform and easy to repair.
The Mosquito was versatile in so many roles, night fighter, bomber, etc.
The German Me Bf 109 served through the whole war and had longer range and better firepower than many Allied aircraft of the time.
The FW190 was the best in Europe for a time.
The Mustang proved itself as a long range bomber escort.
The P38 Lightning enabled long range patrols in the Pacific.

Take your choice.

One of the most advanced(although limited in combat) was the Me163 delta wing rocket /jet powered and faster than anything elswhere.......

although I believe it killed more of its own pilots,crew, than those of the enemy

and optimistically the piloted version of the V1 guided? (doodlebug) bomb.

My father was a WW2 fighter Pilot ,took part in the Battle of Britain, he flew Spits Hurricanes and later Mossies,he said the Mossies were the best,the Spits were fast and you were part of them, however the Hurricane and Mosquitoes were more Solid and durable.

Roald Dahl was in the RAF during WW2, flying a Tiger Moth in the Middle East. Regarding the Spitfire, a new type came in... the mark XIV, this replaced the Merlin engine with a 2,050hp two-stage Griffon e. This enabled the aircraft to reach speeds of almost 450mph, and the rate of climb was better. I did think the Merlin engine could already reach this type of speed already, perhaps not ?

Shame about the Hurricane, always had to take second place to the Spitfire. The Spitfire was going to be called something else at first, what was it now ?

More Luftwaffe planes were shot down by pilots flying the Hurricane than the Spitfire during the Battle of Britain. After urgent attention to pilot seat improved armor the Hurricane could take more battle damage than the Spit. It could be built much faster with the very limited resources available, could be patched up faster and crucially was much easier to fly. The average new pilot going into ops 1940 Biggin Hill had less than 12 hours monoplane flying experience ...

The most successful ww2 warplane in handing out grief to the enemy was the Soviet Union's Yak7 / Yak 9. The latter was also the best dogfighter.

The ww2 plane which had the most influence on the post war world was the Douglas Dakota C-47 which flew civil and military transport from 1935. As the DC-3 it is still in service.

I had quite a lot of rellies flying with the RAF, RAAF and USAF. Some always landed, several didn't. They flew Hurricane, Lanc, Halifax, Whitley, Sunderland, Mosquito, Lysander, Sea Gladiator, Swordfish, P-45 Mustang.
Catalina. One went on to fly jets for BOAC.
