Virol/codliver oil and malt like a spoon full of toffee, used to look forward to it. Also the clinic orange juice. could still get the juice when my daughter was born but there was also a choice of rose hip syrup which she loved.

Liz you're right Virol was the brand name and I loved it. Also clinic orange juice and National Dried Milk.

Nolls, I always thought it was castor oil that was supposed to bring on labour ! Whatever it was, the very thought would make me heave.

I used to be given codliver oil and malt off a spoon, and also the clinic orange juice. I am not sure if Virol was the brand name or if it was something different to codliver oil and malt but had that at times.

As a child my Mother used to give us warm cod liver oil and orange juice, the smell and taste of it used to make me retch, ((((shudders)))))

I learned about the Vick on feet trick from this site and have recommended it to many people. I have tried it myself and it helped me lose that tickly cough overnight.

Do you remember when several of us were trying out those pads for the soles of the feet to remove toxins from the body,? The feet have many points that relate to different parts of the body as shown in reflexology so maybe the Vick connects up somehow to the throat and stops the tickle that way.

Rollo, not sure about cold liver oil lol, altho my son loved his cod liver oil as a youngster, would remind me when the bottle was getting low to buy more and he never had coughs and colds then.

when I was small I got bronchitis every winter without fail - our cottage was old and very damp - apart from being plastered in camphorated oil - for which I blame my large bust!!! - my mother used to make a concoction with vinegar and golden syrup - think that's what it was - didn't taste too bad and cut through the cough

Chris I have copied this as I am prone to coughs especially in the winter, I have just read it to my Aunt and she said she has heard of it before. She said an old fashioned remedy for chesty coughs was to rub goose fat on your chest and cover it with brown paper, keep warm and leave on for days, not too sure how long, she said it works.

Thank you everyone for your contributions.

ChrisofWessex Report 26 Jan 2014 17:55

Ann it certainly works. I had forgotten I used to have it as a child and mentioned to my mother that my toddler had a cough I could not get rid of and back came the recipe - it worked.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 26 Jan 2014 17:38

Chris I think my Dad used to make something like that for tickly coughs.

I have used the vick on feet remedy and it did seem to help.

Have posted this before but if usual cough bottle does not work try this oldie (tried and tested to my knowledge by four generations).

One large spanish onion, peel and slice thinly, place a layer in a bowl then cover with a layer of muscavado sugar and continue the layers until finish. Cover with clingfilm and place in fridge. After a few hours a liquid will form. Take as much as you like - it soothes the cough, cuts phelgm and NO it does not taste yuucky and tastes no worse and better than most cough cures.

Keeps for a few days.

dunno about a small nip of whisky but this certainly works:

mixed hot :

real honey
cold liver oil ( not too much )
real orange juice ( not recons. )
generous helping of malt whisky ( double scots measure ( 5 out ) as a minimum) OR JackDaniels/JimBeam blended is no good at all

repeat as often as needed, you'll soon feel better

chemists remedies are all a waste of time and money at best, quite a lot are harmful

Paula - Vic rubbed on the soles of the feet does help stop coughing, used it severak times.

LadyScozz - A hot lemon drink with more than a wee nip of whisky does wonders for me :-D

Mr M............... I will certainly try that one.

Scozz After suffering a couple of sleepless nights due to incessant coughing, my OH made me a drink of brandy, honey, lemon and hot water. I can't remember much after I drank it.

I can't take most of the over the counter meds (look for ephedrine or pseudo-ephedrine, it's nasty stuff if you have any heart problems).

A hot lemon drink with a wee nip of whisky does wonders. It might not help with a cold, but it makes me feel better :-D

And........... a sliced onion in the bedroom for a couple of nights helps - honest!
The person who doesn't have a cold complains about the stink.
