I have over 40 years experience of Asperger's and Autism Paula - even though I didn't know what it was until 11 years ago.

The first I heard of PDA was a couple of years ago from someone on the Steering Group I am part of. They are coming up with all sorts of names and terms all the time....quite exhausting it is!

Autism is a very large topic with many facets and, to be honest, there is still much to be done to help those who have it - especially the adults.

As your friend's child is only 7 years old, it is to be hoped that she will get the help she needs but I would advise your friend to look at the National Autistic Society website where she may get some helpful info.

My 14 yr old grandson in Oz has a mild form of Aspergers.,and My friends grandson who is 21 has this.These days these autism spectrum cases are being recognised and not neglected...who ever heard of them in our day.People had perhaps strange sorts of behaviour,but we didn't understand.
They can have quite normal lives and tend to be clever but maybe lack some social skills.I believe it's a good job this has been diagnosed before she gets any older.
A few years ago my friends daughter had to fight to get her son treatment and believe me he was really bad,suicidal,destructive etc,and now he is in college doing IT courses.
Hope this helps.Know it's slightly different,but we think of Autism as being very disabling,but this seems to be a part of a wider aspect of it.

Thank you Ann, I read the same on the internet, I just wondered if anyone here had any experience. What are the long term prognosis and expectations. Such a sad time for all the family, my poor friend is at her wits end.

My friends little seven year old daughter has been diagnosed with Pathological denpmand avoidance. I have never heard of this. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this condition please.
