Worth a look........You can track holiday flights as to when they will arrive.

You click on a particular Airplane, and you will
get the Complete Details. The Airline/Flight Number/The Route/Timings/BRILLIANT.
BUT...Be Patient ....Pause for the Flight.

When our offspring used to jet off to/from the States to visit relatives, I used to love watching their little aeroplanes progress.

It wasn't necessarily that site, but something similar :-)

If they sit out in the garden they should be able to tell what the aircraft overhead is and where it's going.

:-D

Not all aircraft are equipped with ADS-B which is what FR24 usually needs to display positions on the map. Aircraft with Mode S transponders but no ADS-B can sometimes be displayed if the area coverage is good but the positions are approximate.

Typically older and or smaller airliners don't have ADS-B, neither do most light aircraft and military aircraft tend not to broadcast their positions

bummer

I was thinking of using it to identify the idiots who fly over our town in small aircraft.

They are REALLY annoying!

I like some of the phrases in your link to AV Herald, Mildred.

Especially "Disagreeing altimeter"
and "Unlikely tyre issue".

LadyScozz, you might be able to identify some of them.

You need to buy a mode S receiver to plug into your PC, that will list all aircraft in the vicinity that are transmitting on Mode S including type and altitude.

You then need to develop your aircraft recognition and height estimating skills which should enable you to determine the offending aircraft.

I understand that by 2016 all aircraft in Australia that are flying Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) will need serviceable mode S transponders. Unfortunately with the Australian weather being so good the aircraft in question will probably be flying VFR.

EDIT: What I said in the last paragraph is not quite right. Read this for what is actually happening:
