Missing sound Win 10

Can anyone suggest a fix.
It seems that every time there is an automatic update to Win 10, the sound disappears, although the icon is still there and there seems no way to restore it.
The laptop is new. Only 2 months old.
I took it back to the retailer last time and only got it back last Friday.
Now the sound has gone again.
I'm a complete technophobe.

Can anyone suggest in simple terms how to put it right please

make sure that the speakers/headphones are plugged into the speaker output (green).

then try control panel

1 enter "system" into cantana (ask me anything) and check that yr audio driver si installed and working under "hardware"if it isn't remove and reinstall
(after removal reboot, it should be auto reinstalled )

2 enter "sound" into into cantana (ask me anything)
check that the correct device is selected as default AND that the volume level is high enough, def not zero.

Thanks Rollo.
Tried every suggestion known to man last night. Nothing worked.
It was obviously a Win10 problem because I had everything as normal on my tablet.
Laptop doesn't have plug in speakers or headphones.
By some miracle, when I logged on this morning, the sound was back.
This is the second time it's happened since I bought the machine at the end of July.
Last time it went back to the retailer who said that a Windows update had corrupted the system. Funny that yesterdays episode coincided with an update.
Happy ay the moment, but not holding my breath. :-S :-S
