Thanks to AnnC and Ramblingrose for the information, very much appreciated.
I will contact the archivist at the Church as you suggest RR, that was how I got to find my gt gt grandmother's final resting place plus a little bit more info that was a surprise! :-)

My Gt.Gt.G.father was a Lighterman on the Thames, and his father before him. My namesake won the Doggett Coat and Badge in about 1845, but sadly I can't find a direct relationship with him.

Stuart if you know that there were baptisms at the same church, have you contacted the archivist if they have one?

What specifically do you want to know? and as Ann says some dates would be helpful. :-)

message from Stuart

I think about four generations of my family were on the boats, it would seem that Daniel or William Parker would be the main men, I do know that one Daniel was a captain, quite a few of the children were baptised at the same church at Wolverhampton which it seems was used by a lot of canal boat families.

Stuart as Teresa has 0 posts by her name it is unlikely she is still a member.

There are plenty of useful sites online if you google 'Canal ancestors' ( as I'm sure you probably already know) , for eg

http://www.canalmuseum.org.uk/collection/family-history.htm

But if you want help with finding a specific Parker family then if you give some details someone will take a look.

Hi Teresa, I am researching the PARKER family, they originate from the Wolverhampton area but also later on, presumably because of new laws or canals opening they put down roots in Runcorn, any info would be very much appreciated!

AnnCardiff Report 4 Jan 2016 12:41

hi there Stuart - welcome to the boards :-)

this would have been better posted on Find Ancestors - however, give us details of what you do have, as I suspect there will be lots of Parkers in Cheshire and elsewhere

Banjeauxman

Banjeauxman Report 4 Jan 2016 12:38

Does anyone have any information please regarding my canal boat ancestors under the name of PARKER, they originated from the Midlands, but when the new laws came into force about children, they took up residence in Runcorn although still working on the boats?

I know there were some Greens living on narrow boats,I think it was somewhere in the Blackcountry because theyhave turned up when I am searching for my own Greens on census.

Of course there were Woods because Ronnie was one of them.

Interestingly, the Swan Report into education devotes as much time to the needs,or lack of them because there are really no more norrowboat dwelling children, for educational provision as it does to the educational needs of fairground showmens' children and there are thousands of them.

I would recommend anyone looking for relatives who worked the Thames and canals to go and join Rootschat.

They have sections dedicated to travellers and a section to Watermen etc.,

If you have never tried Rootschat - it is FREE to join and is just like the boards on here but no Tree. They have lots of dedicated boards from Wars to Graves and Census with many others inbetween.

There are more than a few of us from here on there. Do give it a try.

There are many on the War threads who are only interested in just that and not necessarily genealogy and their knowledge is amazing and the county threads are fantastic.

Canal people and those who carried to canals in West Midlands crop up a bit on my tree.

One is Peter FLAVELL (1833-1914), boat owner born Halesowen. He married Charlotte WILLIAMS (b 1832 Barnet Lake, Herts).

Peter was son of Major FLAVELL born c 1806 Gorsty Hill. Know his wife (BAKER) but nothing much else about him (actual birth, actual death etc).

And canal villages like California and Slack Hillock crop up.

Peter - It's probably best if you used the 'Search All Tree' function on this site, then you can contact anyone who has the same names in their tree as yourself.

Also, you can use the pink rosette shown against the names in your tree which will indicate if the system thinks it may have found a match.

Chances that anyone related spotting this thread, is rather remote. ;-)
