There is a program on American TV called ‘Myth Busters’. Two guys do experiments to either prove or disprove a myth. This one was about ‘ Eating Poppyseed Cake, bagels or doughnuts – will show up in tests for drug use”. They each took a urine sample on a drug test strip as a base test – showed no drugs in their bodies. One chose to eat Poppyseed cake – the other Poppyseed bagels. They ate nothing else for several hours but drank copious amounts of pure water. Every half hour they each did a urine test strip. The first barely showed a line designating drug use. The second was a definite positive and the tests taken every half hour for several hours each showed positive that they had taken drugs. The program was scrutinized for fairness or trickery. Makes you wonder – has anyone been falsely charged for drug use? If you eat a really rummy Christmas Cake would it show a positive test? How much over the limit would you blow after eating chocolate liquers?
