Its still very windy up here on the Chilterns. Keep chucking alka-seltzers out the window but it doesn't seem to help. Smashed my greenhouse yesterday - reglazed it today. Luckily the weather was mild so my plants survived. Len

Ssarah I ran into the Birds today - in a garden centre. They are still chewing over the family tree. I am 80 but they make me feel quite young. Len

Hello Len How lovely to hear from you. You sound as though you are an active 80. Did you buy anything nice in the garden centre? Sarah.

Len of the Chilterns Report 5 Feb 2004 22:20

Sarah No, I didn't buy anything at the garden centre. I went to get ideas but prefer to go to a nursery or builders yard to make purchases (as do the garden centres) where prices are much lower. I cleared a bed of cupressus trees and intend filling the space (about 3 x 10 metres) with shrubs. mostly evergreens. Got any recommendations ? Len Ps My GP assesses my physical condition as being comensurate with a 50 year old. No comment on mental condition, though

So much for the weather forecast today (Sunday) turned out quite mild and sunny despite "another deep freeze" forecast. If it was OK in Stoken, must have been quite balmy in Wycombe, eh Susie? Got quite a lot of shrubs planted - nearly all home grown from cuttings taken and potted over the last year or so. Hi Sarah - still no word from the Birds - but don't hold your breath, I have a feeling that they will not stir themselves. Len

Len of the Chilterns Report 10 Feb 2004 11:10

When I bought my house in Stoken ( July 1969) we were having a lovely, balmy summer. After settling in we noticed it was a bit "fresh" up here and very windy. The following spring our snowdrops, daffs etc seemed to come out later than elsewhere (we also kept them later). Soon after, I read in the Bucks Free Press that, on average, the temperature here was 3°f lower than in the surrounding countryside, due to height and strong prevailing winds across the plains of Oxford . We sometimes have snow here when they don't in Wycombe, Marlow or Booker. I have a couple of pairs of long johns - for emergencies. Len
