Sky Sports News understands Middlesbrough have made an approach for Lyon striker Fred.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate is desperate to add firepower to his squad in the January transfer window, with the Premier League strugglers having been linked with a host of strikers.

Heerenveen hit-man Afonso Alves has been mooted as a possible target, as has Sheffield United's Rob Hulse, but it is Fred who has shot to the top of Boro's wish-list.

West Ham and Tottenham have both been linked with the gifted 24-year-old but it is Middlesbrough who have lodged the first enquiry.

Whether Fred would be willing to swap the top of Ligue 1 for a battle to beat the drop in England remains a topic of conjecture.

What the Papers Are Saying:

Spurs to ditch flops - The Sun

Juande Ramos is ready to wield the axe at White Hart Lane, with Paul Robinson rumoured to be on his way out. Oscar Ustari, Timo Hildebrand or Jussi Jaaskelainen could be a replacement, while Lyon striker Fred is also a target.

Blues close on Samaras - The Sun

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish hopes to finalise a £2.5million deal for Man City striker Georgios Samaras this week. Would he be a good signing?

Magpies to offload Martins? - The Sun

Aston Villa and Manchester City have registered an interest in signing Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins. Should Newcastle let the Nigerian go and where should he go if he does leave?

Boro line up Spurs swap - Daily Star/Guardian

Middlesbrough could take Jermain Defoe from Spurs in exchange for either Stewart Downing or Adam Johnson. Who would get the better part of the deal? However, Defoe is also interesting Villa and Boro have Sheffield United's Rob Hulse as another option.

Hammers ready for triple swoop - Daily Mirror

Alan Curbishley is poised to bid for Nicky Shorey, El Hadji Diouf and David Nugent. Do the Hammers need any more players and are these the type Curbishley should bid for?

Latics eye South American flair - Daily Mirror

Steve Bruce is ready to inject a touch of style to his Wigan team with a bid for Ecuador international Carlos Tenorio.

Rovers' touch of Sas - Daily Mirror

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes is considering a move for Turkish ace Hasan Sas. Would he be a good signing for the club?

Cisse not a City target - The Guardian

Marseille president Pape Diouf claims to have turned down an approach from Man City for Djibril Cisse, but reports suggest City actually want his team-mates Samir Nasri and Mamadou Niang. Which of the three would be best for City?

He answers "Well Honey, I've done this jigsaw in only 43 days."

"SVEN GORAN ERRIKSSON"

Now he is our Maine man,
I know we are at Eastlands but he was always in the plan,
Criticised at England often unfairly,
Oh God what does the man have to do he hardly lost any,
Now he is City we sit up there with pride,
Sat in the top four though Christmas has now subside,
Think we will beat the hammers in replay of the cup,
He is a quitely mannered mild man,
So shrewd within his brain,
So Sven please keep on with the plan,
Us City fans are happy that your our Maine man.
