Harlands in England come from NE yorkshire, Durham, but I have read that is originally Anglo-Saxon, coming from France or Norway/Sweden and spelt Harlan (dropping the d). All Harlans in America are descendents of two Harland brothers who emigrated there from NE England, who were Quakers and moved there for religious freedom. Check out www.harlanfamily.org.

Hi there: Not all those Quaker Harlands went to US from Durham, of from the "Plsntation". The branch we are from slowly moved southward, eventually ending in the Isle of Axholme in Lincolnshire. We can go forward from 1700 and also make connection with Irish scholar who has written the Harland Diaspara. Now the route between 1600 and 1700 covers a lot of territory! There are many genealogists working on the connection but no one has yet to make firm connections. Also the families stayed Quaker and others converted to Church of England. The Quaker Book of Sufferings lists enough Harland and their connections to make all this very believeable. So one of those Quaker Harland surname connections stayed on Plantation working way in Ireland and southward over 100 yrs. keeping the faith. We would love to find a way to hook up but the Plantation was where dissenters were sent and not so easy to trace altho Irish sholar is sure trying. So not all those Quaker Harlands came to America as they are all over Yorkshire, LIncolnshire and other earlier now merged counties or shires. Wilma Gulstad
