Hi,
I think I may have cracked this case with your help.
I followed the Wilkinson Floyd and Annie Smith line.
She appears on the 1911 census as living at 19 Ormond Street, South Shields. My Father in Law was born at 13 Ormond Street, South Shields - too much of a coincidence I think.
This would make my Husbands Grandfather Robert I C Floyd, why did he change his middle name to Shannon that is anybodies guess.
As Wilkinson was a draper and this is what is on the marriage certificate of Robert and Isabella it is all too much of a coincidence, mind you we do have Robert putting his Fathers name as Robert, but as Wilkinson seems to have disappeared what is a name change!
Thank you everybody for your help you were most kind and thank God for the 1911 census.
Regards
Pam :-D

Sorry i have never used these threads before and didn't realise how you are supposed to answer even though I have been a member for years.
Have just looked at original 1911 census and see what you mean about Tomas, so perhaps that explains about my Father in law not being on any census. I suppose putting him down as a labourer is just one of those errors.
Looked at the marriage certificate and it shows William Scales and Polly Murray as witnesses.
Everything I can find about Robert shows him being born in South Shields, there are family rumours about a Scottish connection.
Guess I will have to keep looking, at least my Mother in laws family are easy as they didn't move very far from their home village in Devon.
Thanks once again.
Pam

Have you looked at the original of the 1911 census, as 'Tomas' is initially down as son and an infant, and this entry has been amended?

With a middle name of Shannon, was he actually born in Ireland?

I've just opened the same reply Reggie :-D

I'll go back to Pamela again and advise her to post on here. Cx.

Who witnessed the 1904 marriage?

ErikaH Report 19 Mar 2012 13:22

PM received - have advised Pam that I am copying it here

Hi,
Thanks for coming back with this information, sorry I haven't answered before I have been in bed with flu and I can tell you the last thing on my mind was family history.
Now what I know is that on my father in laws birth certificate it show Thomas Lilly Floyd born in South Shields 30.09.1909, father Robert Floyd, mother Isabella Floyd formerly Scales - living at 13 Ormonde Street South Shields. In 1912 when David W E Floyd was born they lived at 11 Alderson Street South Shields.
On my in laws marriage certificate Thomas Lilly's Father is named as Robert Edward Floyd (deceased) a rivetter.
I then got the marriage certificate that shows Robert Shannon Floyd and Isabella Scales married on 04.04.1904 living at 73 Morton Street. Father's name is given as Robert Floyd (deceased) a draper.
I also looked on the 1911 census and found them living at 24 Burrow Streeet, South Shields. As boarders are Robert age 31, Isabella age 27, Isabella age 5 (Daughter) and Tomas age 26, no sign of Thomas Lilly who would have been about 2.
We always knew that Robert had died in WW1 as my Husbands Grandmother remarried to Samuel Jobling, so I looked on deaths in WW1 and found he died on the first day's landing at Gallipoli.
I can not find them on any other census and have been told that Robert's war record no longer exists.
I have contacted some Jobling's that still live in the South Shields area but they know nothing of Isabell'a first husband. I also found all the information that has been given in this thread but none of it feels right.
As I live in Devon going to the area to search would be a major event, so I thought that trying a thread might help.
Thanks once again for your help.
Pam

I automatically sent one of my pm's yesterday.

It hasn't been opened as yet.

I usually give the new folk 24 hours to return to their thread before I send one.

I rarely remind those who have over 20 posts to their names - they should have sussed the system by then I reckon. :-D

I've just noticed that Pamela includes the surname Scales in her 'researching' list, so she knows more than she implies in her post
