Well there's a marriage registered and the spouse is Elsa C A Sprenger, but no mention of Hess in the index. Without the certificate how can you know it is her? As you say, the marriage was registered Wiesbaden 1928, page 262 (according to this site) on the GRO Army record index.

Not sure how you go about getting a copy of the certificate, but the GRO website should have the details. Think you may need this for further details on her ancestry and proof she is the same person.

You say both your grandparents died in tragic circumstances, have you tried newspaper archives for reports on their deaths or an obituary?

Penny Report 28 Mar 2012 14:15

Why didn't you say they married in Germany?

So how do you know Elsa was that woman? How do you know he wasn't married to someone else and Elsa wasn't his second marriage?

You said she left Weisbaden in 1904, you didn't mention she went back again! lol!

Hello all
Kingsmill, Birth cert 1896 William E Livett or Levitt is correct
and Elsa C A Hess 1894 as per birth cert. and the document from the Antwerp Police dept when that family left Weisbaden.

I will try Friends Reunited as you suggest Patchem but not too hopeful as they are so old now.

If you have her marriage certificate, is her name stated as "Elsa Sprenger, formerly Hess" or is it "Elsa Sprenger-Hess" (hyphenated)? The reason for the question is that a number of European states name their children with the convention: Christian name/Fathers surname- Mothers surname.

In which country were they married and what was her marital status at the time?

KINGSMILL

If you want to find out about their life here and as 'James attended Ainthorp High School in Hull. ' have you looked for any of his contemporaries on Friendsreunited from that school? (Though they would be 82 now....)

WHICH marriage cert?

I have twice advised Anjella to use the 'add your reply' box - I don't know why she can't see it!

We can't help if our questions don't get properly answered.

PM received

Have told Anjella I've copied it, and also advised her to respond on here

James William LEVITT was the only child of William and Elsa - they died tragically together in 1945.
James was my father and he passed away in similar circumstances as his parents sadly.
I would like very much to find out something about them and their lives in Hull UK as from about 1930 (james birth till their deaths in 1945).
I am stuck as I can't acccess the Military records until I can get into Melbourne city.
anyway - thanks for your assistance. I am going to Hull next year and could research some things about them.
James attended Ainthorp High School in Hull.

Anjella

You say this woman 'married' William Levitt - have you any proof of the event? It can't be found on freebmd, so where do you think the event occurred?

Is the 1930 birth that of your father?

If so - you need the cert to find out if she gave any name other than Hess, which would help your quest.

If the info is accurate, Hess was her birth name, so why do you have her in your GR tree as Sprenger?

Flip has given you info about their entry into Belgium- have you followed that up?

There is no record of them that I can see in the 1911 England & Wales census records.

When was William born? When did he die?

PLEASE respond on HERE....do not click on my name. Thank you
