KINGSMILL Report 27 Mar 2012 07:52

(married in 1928 to William Levitt from Hull in the UK where she lived till her death) WHERE MARRIED ............abroad ? BELGIUM as FLIP posted ?

Can we have some details ??

(she emigrated from Weisbaden with her sister Louise and father in 1904)
Wiesbaden is a city in southwest Germany and the capital of the federal state of Hesse

If you have her marriage certificate, is her name stated as "Elsa Sprenger, formerly Hess" or is it "Elsa Sprenger-Hess" (hyphenated)? The reason for the question is that a number of European states name their children with the convention: Christian name/Fathers surname- Mothers surname.

In which country were they married and what was her marital status at the time?

Anjella Report 28 Mar 2012 09:24

Hello all
Kingsmill, Birth cert 1896 William E Livett or Levitt is correct
and Elsa C A Hess 1894 as per birth cert. and the document from the Antwerp Police dept when that family left Weisbaden.

I will try Friends Reunited as you suggest Patchem but not too hopeful as they are so old now.

Anjella Report 28 Mar 2012 09:33

marriage in 1928
as per another site, I was given this information by a lady who looked up this marriage for me .
This is what she sent me quite a few weeks ago.

Name: LEVITT, William E
Place : Wiesbaden
Country: Germany
Year: 1928
Page: 252
Spouse's last name: Sprenger
Record source: GRO Index Army Marriages (1881 to 1955)

Penny Report 28 Mar 2012 14:15

Why didn't you say they married in Germany?

So how do you know Elsa was that woman? How do you know he wasn't married to someone else and Elsa wasn't his second marriage?

You said she left Weisbaden in 1904, you didn't mention she went back again! lol!

Flip Report 28 Mar 2012 21:04

Well there's a marriage registered and the spouse is Elsa C A Sprenger, but no mention of Hess in the index. Without the certificate how can you know it is her? As you say, the marriage was registered Wiesbaden 1928, page 262 (according to this site) on the GRO Army record index.

Not sure how you go about getting a copy of the certificate, but the GRO website should have the details. Think you may need this for further details on her ancestry and proof she is the same person.

You say both your grandparents died in tragic circumstances, have you tried newspaper archives for reports on their deaths or an obituary?
