Hi i am trying to find a william george barnes that had links to gloucester, priors park tewkesbury and maybe even bristol. If he were still alive now he would be in his 90s maybe?? I think he was a hgv driver or cabinet maker. I am really drawing a blank on this one and any help would be GRATEFULLY appreciated please. Many Thanx :-S

Sandra,

With the best will in the world I am not really that surprised to hear you say you are drawing a blank on this one.

You have a man's name but you do not know if he is alive or dead. You do not know when or where he was born. You do not know what his occupation was other than a lorry driver or a cabinet maker. You think he had links with 3 different towns.

What do you know about the man for certain?

Sandra Report 10 May 2012 17:23

I know he was my fathers father but didnt marry my grandmother nancy allsopp, on dads first birth certificate he was a hgv driver on the new one he had to get it says he was a cabinet maker?? Nancy was previously married to a bertram mitchell and had 2 children with him then he died in war and nan met william and had my dad, i do not know if he stuck around or not as this was all hush hush and to this day my father only knows what i hace put above although my uncle said he was from tewkesbury priors park and he was sure he had malaria. Naturally my father didnt take his name but mitchell instead x

Sandra, this is very odd. The details on your father's birth cert should not change - there might be an error somewhere. But it makes no difference, except for how much he was likely to move around!
There is a birth for a William G. Barnes in Tewkesbury, but it is in 1912.

My nan was born in 1914 so that date sounds about right, im just not sure how to follow it up, forgive me for being so useless lol x

brummiejan Report 10 May 2012 17:50

You are not being useless! It is just very difficult. The only thing I can think of is to go with that birth for now - you would need the birth cert to check out the middle name. This is going to need a few leaps of faith.
If it looks viable, you can use the birth date to look for a possible death.
Apologies by the way - grandfather not father!!

This is not relevant for now, but if the Cheltenham death ever turns out to be yours, put this to one side - might well be the marriage of that person:

Well, you will have to fork out a few bob! My inclination would be to get the death cert first - at least the name fits. This man was quite young when he died so he might still have been working, you might be lucky and have an occupation on there to help you.
Actually, being me I would get the marriage cert too, but I have never been known for my patience! Obviously they might not be yours but as far as I can see this is the best lead we have at the moment.

How do i get them? x

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 10 May 2012 18:28

You can order online from the GRO (General Records Office). Certs cost £9.25 and take roughly a week to arrive. You have to register and use a credit/debit card. There is a form you can print off and post if you prefer, but most people just do online ordering.

You will need all the details as provided above. Be careful to fill in details precisely as they are fussy! (But you will be refunded if they cannot find what you have ordered).

Good luck, do let us know how you get on..

Other remotely possible marriages, as discussed by PM. Looked 1929-49 at counties bordering Gloucestershire.

Daft as it sounds, does your uncle remember if he had an accent?

Nothing was mentioned of an accent he just remembers him living in tewkesbury x

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 11 May 2012 17:40

Well, I can't come up with anything better! If your uncle can pin down the location a bit more - like a street! - it might be possible to make use of that. Otherwise I can only suggest following the Tewkesbury/Cheltenham trail as above.
Possibly another member will have a better idea!

It was priors park in tewkesbury x

brummiejan Report 11 May 2012 18:11

Just had a look at google map - this is an area rather than a street I think? It looks pretty small. If you are a very determined woman you could look up all the streets on the electoral register and see if you can find him living with anyone else. You are probably aware that this has to be done in person, unless staff are willing to look for you.
Bear in mind there was no electoral register during the war.

If you decide to go down this route, I think you need Tewkesbury Library - go here, there are contact details:

http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/libraries/tewkesbury

I think this is the right place, but if not they will be able to tell you.
