I've found a birth that I think is my grandfathers sister. They were both born in America as the family emigrated but then came back. On the 1911 census it states they had 2 children, 1 living and 1 dead. Does anybody know how I go about getting a certificate? I've only ever needed english ones but I want to be sure it's the right person.

Thank for your help.

Have you looked at passenger records to determine when and where in America they emigrated to please? Have you looked at the 1910 census if they were still in America then?

Maisy Report 9 Nov 2012 20:02

I have them on passenger list going to America and on 1901 census in England. I've found the great grandparents on 1911 census but not grandfather. I've found the birth of the daughter on Ancestry and would like a certificate but have no idea how to go about it.

Thanks

So where was Grandfather in 1911? Is the birth for the possible sister in the same area as Grandfather was born please?

How do you know that the child that died was born in America please? Of course if it is an unusual surname that you are researching that will make things easier.

Sorry I didn't come back sooner.

I don't know where my grandfather was in 1911 have searched for him but no luck.
I found a birth for Helen A Garrett b.26 Aug 1890 in Allegan, Michigan. This date is the birthdate of my grandfather so obviously they were twins.

On 1911 census where it asks how many children and how many living, gt grandparents put 2 children, 1 living. This is what got me looking for another child.
I've found something on Ancestry regarding Helen but was hoping to get a certificate of some sort. I don't know how to go about it.

I'm logging off here now but will come back tomorrow to see if any replies.

Thanks

Is this the family in 1901?
1901 England Census
Henry T Garrett Age: 30 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871
Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Alice Garrett
Gender: Male Where born: Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England
Civil parish: Bidborough Ecclesiastical parish: St Lawrence Town: Bidborough County/Island: Kent Country: England
Registration district: Tonbridge Sub-registration district: Tunbridge Wells
ED, institution, or vessel: 2 Household schedule number: 42
Piece: 751 Folio: 14 Page Number: 6
Henry T Garrett 30
Alice Garrett 32
Allen A Garrett 10 United States
Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 751; Folio: 14; Page: 6.

Any chance that Allen and Helen are the same person, wrongly transcribed, and the dead child is completely separate?

If Allen is the grandfather maybe that record should be Allen not Helen?

You can view image on Family search for "Helen"s birth. It does say she's female. Also says the parents are English.

You can order Michigan birth certs through Vitachek. Just google Michigan birth certificate.

Seeing as you have the date of birth, you might be able to order the cert. without the forename.

Travelling with Mrs Garrett (age 26) and Alan Garrett (male child, no age given). But no sign of Helen, I wonder if they were mis-heard when they registered the birth and the registrar assumed it was a female child because of the name?

Gosh, thank you for all your replies, you've certainly given me something to think about. I looked at the birth for Helen and thought as the date was the same they were twins. I'm now thinking it could very well be mistranscribed. Granddad's name was Alan Albert Garrett.

I have a letter written by the midwife to say that she delivered Alan Garrett on 26 Aug 1890 but thought it was strange there was no mentioned of another child if he had a twin. I think I will buy the birth certificate for Cynthia Garrett and see if the parents are the right ones. The family lived in Tonbridge, so is a real possibility.

Thank you once again for all your thoughts on this.

Having looked on Ancestry and found baptism for Cynthia b.1908, it's not the right one so I need to think again about this.
