Anne Report 22 Dec 2012 21:57

I am trying to trace relatives of Violet Knight who married my great uncle Ernest Beck in about 1921. They emigrated to Australia in 1921 and settled in Adelaide. Here the trail goes cold. Can anyone help me in finding their children. Many thanks

Ernest W Beck was born in 1884 in Marylebone and Violet was born in 1899 in Kent

Cherilyn Report 3 Jan 2013 05:34

I think that the above Ernest Wm BECK (d. 1947 SA) married this lady in SA:

1919
279/183
BECK Ernest William
PASH Alice Violet
Adelaide

The Advertiser, Saturday 31 May 1919
BECK—PASH.—On the 20th April, at St. John's Church, Adelaide, by the Rev. H.
Finnis, Ernest W., second son of the late Joseph Henry Beck, of Surrey, England, to Alice Violet, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pash, of Henley Beach.

Does this fit 'your' Ernest?

Soemthing funny going on here!

BECK Ernest William b. c1889 M 1921 London [to] Australia Adelaide
BECK Alice Violet b. c1899 F 1921 London [to] Australia Adelaide

This looks like the above couple returning to Australia a couple of years after marriage...ie Alice Violet nee PASH, not Violet R KNIGHT...

In addition there are several BECK births in Strood and Medway after 1921 with mother's maiden name KNIGHT...

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 3 Jan 2013 05:43

Then there's this birth in SA:

1899
636/490
PASH Alice Violet
[father] Frederick William PASH
[mother] Alice May NORTHWAY
[district] Adelaide

Cherilyn Report 3 Jan 2013 05:48

BUT! I think this may be what happened (after looking at your other thread)...

Passenger destination: Adelaide, Australia

Met and married Alice Violet PASH in SA in 1919, then returned to the UK briefly, coming back to SA in 1921 with his wife, niece, brother & sister-in-law:

Name: Mr Ernest William BECK
Date of departure: 21 September 1921

In other words, Violet R KNIGHT is not connected, it was the SA-born Alice Violet who he married...

Her father Frederick Wm PASH d. 1939 in Adelaide aged 68; buried at Mitcham Anglican Cemetery. Likely birth in SA in 1871 to Fredk Jas PASH & Martha WILLIAMS.

The Mail, Saturday 25 February 1939

Quite some tragedy and drama :-( Makes me wonder if Alice & Ernest also divorced!

His wife is not mentioned in his death notice at all:

His brother Fredk James had a death notice placed in the Sydney Morning Herald on 17th July 1981. Might be worth requesting a lookup via the Ryerson Index.

Bit more on the PASH line - this is Alice Violet PASH's grandfather's obituary:

The Register, Wednesday 16 April 1913
Mr. Frederick James Pash, who for many years had been widely known and highly esteemed in Adelaide musical circles, died on Monday, at his residence, Childers street, North Adelaide, from peritonitis, following upon an illness which had manifested itself only on the previous day. Deceased, who was born in London, 65 years ago, was brought to South Australia in infancy. He conducted a saddlery business in Currie street, and in his spare time assisted the musical department of various church enterprises, and was also a member of' the Orpheus Society. Mr. Pash led the Archer Street Methodist Church Choir for 37 years, and resigned from the position two years ago. In 1887 he led the choirs for some of the concerts in the Adelaide Exhibition, and had frequently. wielded the baton in connection with large mission and Sunday school combined choirs for special occasions, and his services at the Tatala Labour Prison were highly appreciated. He has left a widow, nine sons, and one daughter (Mrs. Goldsmith).

First wife Martha died young, only about a month after the birth of their youngest child on 30 Dec 1885:

The South Australian Advertiser, Monday 25 January 1886
PASH.—On the 24th January, at Tynte-street, N.A., Martha, the beloved wife of F. J. Pash, aged 39 years, leaving a husband and nine children to mourn their loss.

He remarried 22/3/1888 to Zilpah FRANCIS (1862-1914). They had a son born in 1899 - same year as Alice Violet was born (so she had an uncle the same age as she was!).

Hi Cherilyn

Wow! I am speechless at the information you have managed to find. I knew about Frederick and Edith Mabel as I did meet them back in the 1950s, but Ernest is a complete mystery. My grandmother never spoke of her brother Ernest and all I found out from her years ago was Frederick and Ernest emigrated just after WW1

As you have found a marriage for Ernest I will alter my tree to that effect.

Once again, many many thanks.

Update on the Beck Famly. Thanks so much for suggesting The Ryerson Index. I have found the Death Notice and found the names of Fred and Edith Mabels grandchildren and great grandchildren. Your help has been invaluable and I don't know how I would have managed with your assistance. Thanks a lot
